Overview The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office is a trusted partner in public safety, providing essential services such as running the Norfolk City Jail, courthouse security, and crime prevention programs. Responsibilities

Maintain buildings and grounds: repair trellises, install and remove fences, maintain athletic fields, renovate and refinishing, patch asphalt roads, perform minor concrete work, and set up ladders and scaffolding.

Repair and preventive maintenance of equipment: change belts on air handler units and smoke exhaust fans, clean and service small chiller units, paint and perform electrical repairs, inspect and replace blades, tires, belts, hoses, oil, lubricants, and filters, weld, test and conduct safety inspections, maintain tires, rims, bearings, sharpen, repair and replace blades, and ensure proper operation of equipment.

Perform interior building maintenance: minor plumbing tasks, repair, paint and replace doors, windows, locks, roofs, ceilings, walls, floors, assist in replacing light switches, ballasts, wall outlets, bulbs, clean and service HVAC units, monitor digital management systems, repair damage from exhibit removal, patch holes, install wallboards, toilets, sinks, water fountains, repair leaks, replace faucets and gaskets, modify drain systems, unclog drains, maintain sand filters and pond equipment, install breakers, run conduit or flex, build shelves and platforms, fabricate and repair cabinets, install doors and moldings, and prepare and paint walls and surfaces.

Set up and dismantle barricades, transport and hang banners, block off parking lots, set up power, sound systems and podiums, paint, plaster, construct temporary walls and office spaces, repair and replace ceiling tiles, broken bricks, floor tiles, install door locks, unload and transport displays, repair bleachers and benches, and assist the welding and carpenter shop.

Perform other duties: inventory management, respond to fire alarms and determine actions.

Support emergency response: removal of ice, snow and storm debris.

Work environment: within the correctional facility with direct contact with inmates. Standard work week and hours with minor adjustments expected. Position includes on‑call duties on a rotating basis.

Qualifications

One year as a Maintenance Worker or successful completion of the Operations Apprentice program.

High school diploma or equivalency.

Ability to read and understand written instructions, perform general math calculations, write time sheets and supply requisitions, and sometimes direct helpers or temporary employees.

For civilian applicants, a valid driver’s license is preferred; otherwise a valid state identification card is required. If operating a city vehicle is essential, a valid driver’s license from the legal state of residency will be required.
