Overview
The HVAC Technician will troubleshoot, repair and maintain heating, ventilation and refrigeration systems used in an underground and surface mining environment. Responsibilities
Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities. Inspect, repair, modify and install HVAC equipment including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, forced air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves and capillary tubes. Conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas, and electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs. Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves. Perform preventive maintenance on underground refrigeration units. Learn and understand the underground chilled water system, add water system, and condenser water system. Install, replace, and service systems, components, and controls, including chillers, pumps, and related components. Maintenance of spray chambers; install, repair, and start up spray chambers, including piping manifolds, pumps, chamber, and tank. Use meters, instruments and tools required to properly work on refrigeration equipment and systems. Repair and rebuild semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors and compressors for centrifugal refrigeration machines. Install and calibrate systems; install copper and steel tubing and repair pipes and tubing as necessary. Flush heat exchangers and descale tubing. Rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps. Test and examine boiler operations; conduct boiler water quality test and treatment; adjust boiler burner combustion. Electrical troubleshooting and repairs in coordination with the Electrical Department for equipment 480V and above. Read blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine operation, troubleshooting and repair of chillers and related components and systems. Machinery installation; follow proper procedures for installation and alignment of components and electric motors. Test all equipment repairs as applicable. Perform data input for inventory and cost control tracking; complete required maintenance work orders, reports and logs. Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in the workplace. Comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations; conduct activities in an environmentally responsible manner. Follow MSHA rules and regulations, environmental rules, SOPs and work area instructions; participate in safety and environmental activities. Communicate effectively with team members; comply with company policies and procedures, especially on Safety, Human Resources and Environmental matters. Participate in Risk Assessment activities and in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as required. Meet criteria established in the Maintenance Progression System (attached). Education and/or Experience: High school graduate or equivalent; Technical certificate from an accredited air conditioning and refrigeration program. Licenses: Type I and Type II refrigeration licenses to comply with Federal law 40 CFR part 82, subpart F. Experience: Previous Mine setting preferred. Other: Ability to access equipment information using electronic devices; computer literate with basic Excel, Word and MS Outlook. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents and technical procedures. Mathematical Skills: Basic arithmetic in all units of measure. Reasoning Ability: Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Other Qualifications: ATF possessors clearance required; MSHA 40-hour training or 5000-23 documentation; ability to pass physical and drug screening and essential functions capacity test.
