Job Description And Duties Under the direction of a Principal Bridge Engineer, the incumbent will work as the Office Chief of Bridge Design. This is a management level position with responsibility for project delivery relative to bridge design work primarily in the North Regions (Districts 1, 2, and 3) of Caltrans. The incumbent may also act as an assistant to the Bridge Design Deputy Division Chief in charge of a functional area performing difficult and complex bridge or transportation‑related structure engineering work in the field or headquarters office; or act as a departmental representative, a staff specialist, a consultant in a specific bridge or transportation‑related structure engineering field, or on a complex project or research study plus other related work.

Special Requirements Pursuant to California Code of Regulations 549.90, this position will be filled via the California Department of Transportation Managerial Selection Program (MSP) process.
This process provides for examination and job‑selection specific to each position and consistent with the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the classification.

This is a Caltrans Promotional examination.
Applicants must have a permanent civil service appointment with the Department of Transportation and meet the minimum qualifications by the final filing date to participate in the examination.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
Either I. Experience: One year of structure engineering experience as a Senior Bridge Engineer in the California state service.
Or II. Experience: One year of experience equivalent in level of responsibility to a Senior Transportation Engineer in the California state service AND at least two years of structure engineering experience as a Transportation Engineer (Civil), Range D, or higher in the California state service.
Or III. Experience: Broad and extensive (five or more years) engineering experience in the design, construction, and maintenance inspection of bridges, major transportation‑related structures, or transportation‑related buildings. [Three years of the experience applied to this pattern must include: (a) one year of bridge design, construction, or maintenance inspection experience, and (b) two years in a supervisory capacity comparable in level of responsibility to a Senior Bridge Engineer in the California state service.]
Examination Information This examination will utilize an evaluation of each candidate’s experience and education (E&E) compared to a standard developed from the Class Specification. For this reason, it is especially important that each candidate take special care in accurately and completely filling out his or her State application (STD. 678). List all experience relevant to the “Minimum Qualifications”.
This examination will not establish a civil service list; therefore, candidates will not have the ability to transfer their eligibility to other departments. Candidates will be notified of their examination results.
Note: If using Out of Class (OOC) experience, you must submit a copy of your signed and approved OOC documentation. Failure to do so may result in your OOC experience not being considered during the evaluation process of this examination.
