Overview
Parks Maintenance Specialist - Rec and Parks, Parks & Program Services/Horticulture & Land Management Position Summary: Performs skilled grounds maintenance and construction tasks as assigned. Also serves as crew leader on projects involving lower level workers. Responsibilities
Works and cooperates with co-workers and supervisors at all levels. Learns and performs all essential job functions accurately. Operates a variety of equipment including large mowing units, trucks, front loaders, backhoes, skid loaders, tractors with attachments, and bucket trucks; may operate vehicles with trailers over 10,000 pounds GVWR or over 26,000 pounds GVWR. Operates a chainsaw safely according to ANSI standards. Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment and documents repairs. Performs and follows proper horticultural practices in turf and landscape maintenance (aeration, fertilization, pesticide applications, sodding, seeding, top-dressing, pruning, planting, mulching, watering, chipping, tree felling/removal). Directs a crew performing a broad variety of park maintenance operations. Maintains administrative duties including incident reports, timesheets, requisitions, park and playground inspections, pesticide/nutrient records, utility forms, work orders, vehicle logs, and daily park reports. Uses basic computer skills for timesheets, emails, documents, and work order systems. Estimates supplies and materials and develops requisitions; maintains inventory of tools, supplies, materials, and chemicals. Leads and assists with trail maintenance, field/meadow mowing, vandalism repair, trash removal, and related park maintenance tasks; may install/repair fences and signage; assist with snow removal. Leads and directs various construction projects requiring carpentry/construction skills; prepares drawings/plans and may oversee outside contractors. Uses GPS to decipher information; may schedule/outsource work to contractors as needed. Performs traffic control via flagging and supports emergency operations when required (essential personnel). Performs snow removal duties and supports inclement weather operations for Public Works if needed. Attends trainings and serves on committees as assigned; identifies and applies sustainability practices in department operations. Qualifications
Minimum Required Education/Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the 12th grade plus two (2) years in landscaping/park maintenance or related field; or completion of an associate's degree in horticulture/park/resource management with relevant hands-on experience. Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Parks/landscape experience preferred; experience operating various landscaping/maintenance equipment. Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Valid driver’s license (valid for employment). Maryland Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required and must be maintained during tenure. CPR, First Aid, forklift, bucket lift, chainsaw, and van passenger training or ability to obtain within specified time. State Roadside Tree Expert certification or ability to obtain within time limits. State Certified Nutrient Applicator certification or ability to obtain within time limits. Physical Demands and Working Environment
Frequent standing, sitting, use of hands; occasional walking, reaching, climbing, kneeling, or crouching; ability to lift 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Vision requirements as stated. Weather exposure and varying terrain; exposure to noise, chemicals, and high/elevated work; bucket height up to 70 feet. Additional Information
