PGY1 Pharmacy Residency The PGY1 Residency program at The University of Kansas Health System provides educational and training experiences for pharmacists in the fundamentals of exemplary contemporary pharmacy practice in an integrated health care system. Through various clinical, practice management and pharmaceutical practice training segments, the residency instills a philosophy of practice that embraces the concept that pharmacists must be accountable for optimum drug therapy outcomes and act as leaders in advancing care of patients. Learning experiences include acute care, critical care, specialty care, quality, medication safety & drug policy, and a variety of health system electives.

PGY1/2/MS Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency The purpose of the residency is to provide educational and training experiences for pharmacists in the fundamentals of exemplary contemporary pharmacy practice in an integrated healthcare system. Through various clinical, practice management and pharmaceutical practice training segments, the residency instills a philosophy of practice that embraces the concept that pharmacists must be accountable for optimum drug therapy outcomes and act as leaders in advancing care of patients. This program is designed to provide a strong clinical experience and equip graduates with the essential leadership skills necessary to assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities throughout their career. This 2- year program includes a Master’s Degree from the University of Kansas.
PGY1/2 Medication-Use Safety and Policy Residency The purpose of the residency is to provide educational and training experiences for pharmacists in the fundamentals of exemplary contemporary pharmacy practice in an integrated healthcare system, with a focus during the PGY2 year in medication safety and medication management. The PGY1 experience will instill a philosophy of practice that embraces the concept that pharmacists must be accountable for optimum drug therapy outcomes and act as leaders in advancing care of patients. Rotations include acute care, critical care, specialty care, quality, medication safety & drug policy, and a variety of health system electives. The PGY2 experience is designed to equip the resident with expertise in the practices of formulary management and medication safety and the ability to assume a leadership role in these areas. The resident will receive advanced training in safe medication-use practices and process improvement as a member of an interdisciplinary team focusing on patient safety within the health system. The resident will also contribute to the optimization of medication management through the provision of evidence-based evaluation of the medical literature, including the preparation and presentation of materials to support the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P& T) Committee or a P&T Subcommittee in medication-use policy and formulary management considerations.

PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency The Post Graduate Year Two Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency at The University of Kansas Health System focuses on developing the knowledge, attitudes, training and skills necessary to cultivate pharmacists who are competent and compassionate practitioners who are prepared for a role as an ambulatory care pharmacist. Residents will have experiences in numerous ambulatory clinics with both a longitudinal rotation and block rotations in areas based on their interests. They will have a flexible schedule that is adjusted to align with their goals and interests and give them experiences in comprehensive clinics such as primary care, heart failure, HIV, and transplant to specialty disease states such as rheumatology, dermatology, IBD, epilepsy and many more.
PGY2 Critical Care Residency At the University of Kansas Health System, the ASHP-accredited Critical Care PGY2 program focuses on the complex management of critically ill patients in a variety of patient care areas. Experiential training opportunities are offered in intensive care areas such as medical, medical oncology, surgical/trauma/burn, bone marrow transplant, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular, neuro/neurosurgical/ENT, infectious diseases, pediatric, and emergency medicine. Additional longitudinal experiences available include health-system committee participation, didactic teaching, emergency response, precepting pharmacy students, administration-leadership and project management and research opportunities.

PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency The PGY2 ID residency at The University of Kansas Health System is a 12-month program designed to provide residents with robust learning experiences in the management of clinical infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) practices. Longitudinal responsibilities include participation in the ASP, research, inpatient pharmacy staffing, and educating other clinicians. As a member of the ID/ASP pharmacist team, the PGY2 ID resident works closely with the ID physicians and fellows, particularly the ASP medical directors. Additionally, the ID/ASP pharmacist team rotates coverage of 9 general and specialty consult services which manage a diverse patient population (i.e., cystic fibrosis, human immunodeficiency virus, and mycobacterial infections). Specialty consult services care for patients with hematologic malignancies and cellular therapeutics, blood and marrow transplants, and solid organ transplants. Upon completion of the residency program, the resident will possess skills and competency to be an infectious diseases clinical pharmacist and an ASP leader.
PGY2 Oncology Residency The PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency at The University of Kansas Health System provides residents with the skills and knowledge to become a competent hematology/oncology pharmacy practitioner. The University of Kansas Cancer Center is designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by NCI and has >4,500 outpatient cancer care visits weekly. With over 50 oncology pharmacists on our team, we offer learning experiences in inpatient/outpatient adult hematology, acute leukemia, and medical oncology, inpatient hematopoietic stem cell transplant, inpatient autologous transplant and CAR-T therapy, and outpatient cancer center pharmacy, breast medical oncology, genitourinary medical oncology, gastrointestinal medical oncology, and head, neck, and lung medical oncology. Electives include outpatient hematopoietic stem cell transplant, palliative care, infectious diseases, and more. Teaching opportunities are available at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and residents will also be involved in clinical committees related to the work of the Cancer Center. The residency is tailored to the interests and the career goals of each resident to build toward a successful career in hematology/oncology pharmacy.
