Summary The Lead Facility Quality Assurance Technician is a specialized and critical position accountable for contributing to HWI's overall business performance by coordinating and leading the daily workflow of tasks executed by technicians in the quality lab. In conjunction with the Manager, Facility Quality Assurance, the Lead Facility Quality Assurance Technician is responsible for ensuring all quality programs are in place and being adhered to, including product inspection & testing, customer complaint and internal nonconformance investigation and corrective action, internal quality system audits, document and records control, product release/disposition, and lab equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

Assist and act as backup for the Manager, Facility Quality Assurance in leading, developing, and coaching other Facility QA Technicians; support non-conformance investigations and corrective/preventive actions; lead and support internal quality system audits; support external quality system audit reviews; maintain documents and records; maintain lab equipment; act as backup for QA technicians with daily tasks such as press checks, final inspections, and finished goods testing.

Conduct assigned laboratory research to develop new or improved products/processes/methods, including documentation and reporting.

Plan, list, and assist with plant and/or field trials and evaluate product properties or methods, including documentation and reporting.

Maintain quality control inspection/testing database and assure all data is entered correctly; review, validate, and analyze daily quality assurance testing results and support product disposition as appropriate; prepare reports as required; monitor trends in data and elevate problem patterns to management.

Monitor raw material and finished goods data and make decisions within established guidelines on batch formula adjustments; ensure any adjustments are reported and distributed in a timely manner.

Utilize continuous improvement methodology to lead daily/weekly tier meetings in the quality lab, participate in other site tier meetings, conduct process-related quality observations (Process Quality Gemba process) and audits, and support continuous improvement initiatives in support of the plant quality management system.

Requirements

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with proven competency in math and sciences; one to two years minimum of college education or technical training with demonstrated competence in math and science preferred.

One to three years of experience in a flexible manufacturing environment quality inspection/testing role preferred; experience in refractories/ceramics (or similar) manufacturing operations strongly preferred.

Prior training and certification in quality-related functions such as auditing is a plus.

Computer operation skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Excellent organizational skills with accurate and precise attention to detail.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate effectively.

Knowledge of refractory products and processes is a plus.

Strong team player with the ability to teach others (coaching) and communicate effectively with all levels of the site organization.

Experience with Oracle ERP system is a plus.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

Physical Activity: Requires 1/3 to 2/3 of time using hands/fingers to handle and/or feel, reaching with hands/arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; less than 1/3 of time standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, tasting.

Lifting: Requires lifting up to 50 pounds less than 1/3 of the time.

Vision: Requires accurate close, distance, color and peripheral vision with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Environment: Requires 1/3 to 2/3 of time exposed to wet or humid conditions, working near moving mechanical parts, exposed to extreme heat or cold, or at risk of vibration; less than 1/3 of time in an office setting with limited exposure, working in high precarious places, exposed to fumes, airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals, exposed to outdoor weather conditions, at risk of electrical shock, working with explosives or at risk of radiation.

Noise: Requires exposure to moderate noise.
