Preferred Qualifications
Role Purpose
The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and must exemplify high standards of customer service, compassion, and professionalism, aligning with BJC’s mission, vision, values, and service standards. This role involves facilitating all aspects of patient entry into BJC facilities, requiring emotional intelligence, professionalism, and the ability to connect personally. Responsibilities include accurate collection of demographics and insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collection to maximize reimbursements and prevent denials. Accurate selection from the Master Patient Index (MPI) is critical for patient safety. The candidate should have a friendly demeanor, attention to detail, and knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
Utilize critical thinking to solve problems, anticipate patient needs, and respond effectively. Communicate professionally with patients, families, and staff in person, via computer, or by phone to ensure a positive experience, maximize reimbursements, and prevent denials, while maintaining accurate clinical, financial, and billing records.
Perform hospital registration and scheduling within multiple BJC systems, ensuring proper patient identification, verifying insurance, scanning and retrieving documents, and confirming that orders are complete, signed, and correct. Provide patients with instructions, financial education, and collect payments.
Understand and enforce hospital compliance with regulations such as Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA Privacy Standards, Patient Bill of Rights, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. Ensure HIPAA acknowledgments are completed by patients.
This is a safety-sensitive position; must work alertly and safely at all times.
