**Job Description:**The Paramedic is responsible for providing emergency medical care and hospital transport to citizens calling 911. The Paramedic classification represents a high level of urgent response care provided for out of hospital medical or traumatic emergencies. Paramedics must possess high levels of treatment skill and several certifications: Paramedic Certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification, CPR Certification, and Emergency Vehicle Operations Course Certification. Paramedics must be licensed in the State of Maryland. Work responsibilities extend to monitoring and ordering supplies and emergency vehicle inspection and maintenance. All work must be performed in accordance with best practices, Federal, State and County laws, regulations, local ordinances, policies, procedures and the Maryland EMS provider protocols. The position works under the direction of and reports to the EMS Shift Supervisor.**Essential Job Functions**Responds to 911 calls and for service and performs patient assessment: CPR, EKG, CO2 monitoring, test interpretation and transportation of patients to care facilities.Provides, when applicable, Advanced Life Support care to patients suffering from medical or traumatic incidents to include the administration of drugs and/or procedures as per Maryland protocolsOrders supplies and equipment for assigned transport unit.

Performs transport unit inspections and maintenance.Sanitizes and deodorizes transport units daily to comply with various infectious control procedures.

Provides emergency care --- bandaging, splinting, medication administration, bleeding control, oxygen administration (and other practices for which personnel are trained).Lifts and carries patients, with assistance, to unit stretcher or transport unit.Documents outcome of all calls to include type of call (emergency or non-emergency), care rendered, patient outcomes, and other protocols associated with the incident.Assures that the documentation required by the career EMS Division, Fire/Rescue/EMS, and MIEMSS is furnished in a timely and accurate manner.Performs quality assurance reviews on previous incident calls with co-workers to ensure best practices are maintained.

Operates emergency vehicles in accordance with County driving procedures and Career Emergency Medical Services Division operating guidelines.

Maintains security levels required to safeguard and protect the privacy of all protected records.Interacts and communicates with volunteer stations, hospital personnel, patients, families, and supervisory personnel.

Assists with station duties, as scheduled or required.**Other Duties**Performs related work as required.**Knowledges, Abilities and Skills (These are pre-employment KASs that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)****Knowledge of--*** Principles and methods of related Paramedic services, including rendering emergency care and safety protocols and procedures.* Best practices of providing Paramedic urgent response, emergency medical care protocols, treatment and transportation, emergency and trauma response.* EMS standard operating procedures, laws, codes, rules, regulations and requirements governing the provision of emergency medical care, services and transport.* Principles and practices of Paramedic emergency medical programs, transport maintenance, emergency vehicle driving compliances, trauma care, continuous training, and quality assurance.Ability to--* Provide Paramedic urgent medical and trauma care in response to 911 calls.* Establish and maintain effective working relationships with EMS personnel, hospital personnel, volunteer station personnel, and with patients and their families.* Respond to service needs to achieve program goals, objectives, and priorities.* Comply with Paramedic standard operating procedures, laws, codes, rules and regulations governing program activities.* Comply with county Standards of Care.* Compile and summarize data and information, as required, for a variety of reports and quality assurance purposes.* Communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences, using technical and non-technical language.* Deal effectively with the public.**Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledges, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)****Training and/or Education:**High school diploma or GED equivalent.**Experience:**One year as an active EMS Clinician, Emergency Medical Technician, Cardiac Rescue Technician, Paramedic or as Medic Corp in the US Military.**Licenses or Certificates:**Maintain a valid driver’s license.Emergency Vehicle Operating Course Certification.Possess and maintain a valid Maryland Paramedic license (Applicants who are not a Maryland certified Paramedic provider that are National Registry certified must obtain a valid Maryland license within thirty days of hire).Maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.Maintain CPR Certification.**Special Requirements:**Subject to agility testing (Candidate Physical Ability Test - CPAT).Subject to background investigation.Subject to pre-employment physical and periodic assessment.Subject to initial drug screening and random testing.Operation of County and volunteer fire and rescue department owned vehicles.**Physical Demands:**Heavy lifting, operating patient transport vehicles, carrying stretchers, medical equipment, and moving patients. Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, cleaning, stocking, and lifting; operation of medical and keyboard devices.**Unusual Demands:**On call and extended hours (including, as required, weekends and holidays). Exposure to mentally challenging and stressful decisions. Exposure to sick, injured, deceased, hostile, and potentially violent patients. Dispensing of urgent medical and trauma care.**Work Hazards:**Heavy lifting, burns, cuts, sprains, falls, handling incoherent or unruly patients. Exposure to smoke, fire, blood toxicants, open wounds, dirt, dust, inclement weather.
