Patient Transporter, Interventional Radiology, Per Diem

Shift: Per Diem (PU) (8‑16 hrs. per week). Days and evenings flexible; occasional on‑call and weekend shifts may be required. Work Location: UM Hospital UTower Interventional Radiology.

Responsibilities

Transport patients and/or visitors between department/unit and ancillary areas, ensuring they arrive safely.

Assist at the main lobby greeting patients and assisting with transport between assignments.

Verify the correct patient by asking for name and date of birth and comparing with the armband, maintaining confidentiality.

Use good body mechanics when transferring and/or lifting patients.

Obtain and transport paperwork/chart with the patient.

Monitor oxygen and intravenous apparatus during transport; report any problems or changes in patient condition to nursing staff.

Report defective equipment to the appropriate manager for repair.

Keep hallways clear by storing equipment in the appropriate areas and exercise caution when moving stretchers, wheelchairs, and equipment.

Participate in disaster drills, in‑service training, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans.

Follow precautionary methods for patients on precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.

Practice good hand‑washing techniques and personal hygiene.

Prepare, disinfect, and cover equipment appropriately.

Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and staff, respecting privacy and cultural considerations.

Knock, introduce, and ask for permission before entering any patient room; provide a privacy sheet and a blanket for comfort, as needed.

Respond promptly to requests, problems, and questions from physicians, staff, patients, and visitors.

Notify appropriate personnel upon arrival/departure of patient and/or items at the unit/department while wearing a tracker.

Adhere to University and unit‑level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.

Core Qualifications

Education : High School diploma or equivalent.

Certification and Licensing : Basic Life Support (BLS).

Experience : No experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes :

Effective oral and written communication.

Ability to handle difficult situations with professional composure.

Accuracy in preparing and maintaining records, files, reports, and correspondence.

Discretion in handling confidential information.

Commitment to the University’s core values.

Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment.

Department Addendum The department operates 24/7, providing continuous services. Responsibilities include transferring bodies to the morgue following appropriate protocols, meeting productivity measures and benchmarks, overseeing bed management, coordinating bed movements, and facilitating transportation of beds to and from the repair shop. The department ensures timely return of rental beds and conducts rounds to clear hallways. The department supports admissions, discharges, unit transfers, radiation oncology, dialysis, and outpatient areas, providing assistance during understaffing periods.
