Overview Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is a 763‑bed academic medical center affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) includes a nationally accredited Chest Pain Center, a Cath Lab that performs over 700 PCIs annually, a Ventricular Assist Device Program, and is an Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Center of Excellence.
Compensation $30,000 sign‑on bonus with up to $10,000 in relocation assistance.
Job Description The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Cardiology provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to adult patients in the intensive care unit and progressive care telemetry unit, ensuring safe and effective drug therapy. In this role, the specialist develops and maintains a clinical practice by participating in bedside rounds, responding to medical emergencies, and delivering decentralized pharmaceutical care to non‑cardiac ICU patients.
The specialist serves as a liaison for cardiovascular pharmacotherapy issues across non‑intensive care medical cardiovascular services and procedural areas, including the cardiac catheterization lab, electrophysiology lab, inpatient cardiac team, cardiology consult team, advanced heart failure team, structural heart team, and pulmonary hypertension team.
Non‑direct patient care activities include collaborating with CVI to develop policies and protocols, providing consultation for other health care providers, educating patients and providers, reviewing and processing medication orders, and representing relevant committees. The specialist participates in staff education and precepting pharmacy students.
The position involves precepting PGY1 pharmacy residents and PGY2 pharmacy residents in critical care and internal medicine through direct patient care rotations, clinical research, medication use evaluations, presentations, and process improvement projects.
Qualifications
Graduate of an ACPE‑accredited College of Pharmacy.
Current Virginia pharmacist license or eligibility for licensure.
ASHP‑accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency required; PGY2 residency training in Cardiology or Critical Care preferred.
Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, teamwork, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
Ability to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision.
Knowledge of general office equipment and procedures, including computer and keyboarding skills.
Licensure and Registration License to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia required within 90 days of hire. If the license is not obtained within 90 days, the employee may be subject to separation from Carilion Clinic.
