The psychiatric hospitals are a hub of excellence for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, with all facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Administrator/Nurse Manager, observes, assesses, plans, intervenes and evaluates outcomes and documents all aspects of patient care. Possesses knowledge regarding the patient population to be served. May coordinate scheduling within assigned areas. Provides primary proactive management for service area during assigned shift with a supportive but clear supervisory manner. Supervises, counsels, and evaluates other nursing staff. Collaborates with Nurse Coordinator, other Nurse Managers, and MH Supervisor/Specialist to ensure 24-hour continuity of care. Assumes duties of the Nurse Coordinator during absence. Is flexible in work schedule. Has broad latitude for initiative and independent judgment. Provides direct nursing care to individual patients as needed. Duties, location of work and shift/pattern are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties include participating in disaster response and/or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations. This position may be eligible to earn additional pay for work performed on evenings, nights and/or weekends. Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Attends work regularly and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. Assess the health/mental status of patients upon admission/transfer and ongoing, documenting assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation to determine priorities and plan therapeutic nursing care. Perform CPR/Heimlich techniques per American Heart Association standards. Provide direction and coordination of staffing and patient care activities on assigned units in a consultative manner with nurse administrators and staff nurses, addressing performance problems promptly and documenting interventions. Facilitate a smooth admission/transfer process by communicating with admissions staff and unit staff; review written documentation to ensure appropriate status and triage patients as needed. Carry out medical staff orders and implement nursing interventions according to standards and policies; meet with unit nursing staff to inform and disseminate information. Provide and document individual/group teaching to patients regarding medications, illness, and treatments, adapting teaching methods to various ages and cognitive levels to facilitate learning. Implement special precautions, explain and document rights restrictions, and implement restraint/seclusion procedures to maintain patient safety and uphold patient rights. Participate in the client abuse and neglect process, ensure patient safety, meet patient needs, monitor and implement Treatment Intervention Protection Strategies (TIPS). Participate as the nursing representative in Performance Improvement teams. Coordinate and manage nursing service personnel on assigned units. Attend mandatory trainings and ongoing education to meet the physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs of patients. Performs other duties as assigned, including disaster response/COOP participation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of recognized American Nurses Association Nursing Standards. Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures. Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act. Supervisory and management techniques. CPR and emergency care skills, including aggression management and restraint techniques as approved by the agency. Positive interaction skills with patients, staff, families, and the public. Ability to handle crisis situations calmly and communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications

Licensed as a registered nurse (RN) in Texas or in a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact. Initial Screening Criteria

Graduation from a Nursing Program accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners is required. At least six (6) months of experience as a practicing RN is required. Six (6) months of experience in a health agency, hospital, or health-care facility is preferred. Bachelor\'s Degree is preferred. Additional Information

Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct, LEIE). Males 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years old; Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21. Flexibility in work hours may be required.
