HSCS is comprised of nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state‑supported living centers. The psychiatric hospitals are a hub of excellence for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, all accredited by The Joint Commission. They provide state‑of‑the‑art treatment that is recovery‑oriented and science‑based. Core Responsibilities

Provide patient care services under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) in an inpatient setting.

Transport and escort patients on and off grounds for activities and appointments, ensuring safety and therapeutic support.

Observe, report, and document patient conditions and behaviors in an electronic record.

Perform delegated nursing duties commensurate with competency, and routine PNA duties when transportation services are not needed.

Guide and mentor PNA I staff as required, and serve on unit hospital committees.

Assist with emergency, health, and personal care services to patients, including performing CPR and responding to medical emergencies.

Make purchases with state gasoline credit cards and appropriately use state funds for patient meals, following facility and state policy.

Maintain vehicle cleanliness, complete check sheets, and report vehicle issues to the supervisor and fleet management.

Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as needed, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.

Carry out additional duties as assigned and support the agency’s obligations in the event of emergencies.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Attend work on a regular basis with a possibly rotating schedule or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.

Transport/escort patients, providing therapeutic support and ensuring arrival with appropriate documents.

Drive safely following state traffic laws and handle motor vehicles responsibly.

Report patient status, transportation/escort issues, and unsafe conditions to the supervisor or other departments.

Use basic computer skills to document and report patient care information clearly and promptly.

Make purchases responsibly with gasoline credit cards and use state monies for patient meals appropriately.

Complete daily check sheets and maintain vehicle mileage logs; clean vehicles after each trip.

Respond to patient emergencies safely, performing CPR as per the American Heart Association guidelines.

Apply therapeutic communication skills, interacting with patients in a caring, respectful manner.

Support PNA duties in the patient care unit and assist the licensed nurse with delegated tasks.

Serve as a preceptor and provide guidance to PNAIs as assigned.

Participate in unit hospital committees.

Call local PD immediately in the event of an unauthorized departure.

Participate in disaster response or COOP activation, potentially requiring alternate shifts or locations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of client rights and Texas traffic laws.

Physically and mentally capable of performing Treatment Intervention and Preventive Strategies (TIPS), Heimlich maneuver, and CPR.

Basic reading, writing, arithmetic, and computer skills.

Ability to observe and evaluate behavioral changes in patients.

Verbal and written communication skills for interacting with hospital personnel, patients, and the public.

Capacity to work closely with psychiatric patients and assist physically compromised individuals.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle, pass a defensive driving course, and lift, carry, pull, and push over 70 pounds.

Proficiency in identifying and correcting vehicle problems and responding to medical emergencies during transport.

Independently make decisions when required.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications

Valid Texas driver license within 90 days of hire, or an out‑of‑state license with an original certified driving record.

CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment).

Initial Screening Criteria

Twelve (12) months of work experience required.

Twelve (12) months of direct care experience preferred.

Additional Information

Applicants must pass fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).

Males aged 18‑25 must register with Selective Service.

All applicants must be at least 18 years old; Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21.

Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime or extended hours possible.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures for immunizations is required.

Employees considered at risk for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza must be vaccinated as per CDC guidelines; if not vaccinated for influenza, a mask and other protective measures may be required.
