The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1 located in Anchorage!
What you will be doing This is an entry‑level genetics lab position part of a small team responsible for extracting and genotyping DNA from commercially important fish, shellfish, and seaweed samples. The role involves laboratory work (manually cutting samples, wet chemistry, using liquid‑handling robots, hand‑pipetting, and imaging with state‑of‑the‑art instruments), office tasks (genotype data processing, database entry, quality control, data management), and occasional remote field work trips accessed by ATV, small plane, or helicopter to collect fish tissue samples and otoliths.

The position is not designed for telework; however, flexibility in the onsite work schedule is available.
Working conditions The GCL lab and offices are located at 333 Raspberry Rd, Anchorage. The lab includes areas equipped with robots and instruments dedicated to specific tasks.
May require occasional in‑state travel by helicopter, skiff, ATV, or small plane.
Qualifications Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Attention to Detail : Thorough work, conscientious to detail.
Conscientiousness : High effort, responsible behavior.
Computer Skills : Use of software applications, databases, automated systems.
Oral and Written Communication : Effective presentations, attentive listening.
Self‑Management : Goal setting, initiative, high commitment, minimal supervision.
Special notes A valid driver’s license is required. The position may involve access to firearms/ammunition. First Aid/CPR training will be provided at no cost to the employee.
Education A bachelor’s degree in biology, limnology, fisheries science, or a related natural resource field is required. Substitutions: 24 semester hours in qualified biology and 12 semester hours in chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS (upper division courses). Some positions may require specialized training such as hydroacoustics or fish habitat restoration.
