York Space Systems was founded to radically improve spacecraft affordability and reliability, transforming, and enabling next‑generation space mission operations worldwide. Today, York is one of the most innovative aerospace companies, specialising in end‑to‑end customer solutions and the rapid production of spacecraft platforms. York’s complete Space Segment Solution includes spacecraft production, payload integration, system integration & test, launch services, ground segment services, and mission operations, enabling customers to leverage York’s existing technology solutions to get to orbit rapidly and responsively.
We’re seeking an experienced Mechanical Drafter with 5 years or more of hands‑on experience in aerospace mechanical design and documentation. The ideal candidate will be highly proficient in SolidWorks for 3D modelling and 2D drafting, with a strong command of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 standards. This role involves preparing detailed part and assembly drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and technical documentation such as assembly instructions and visual storyboards to support the release and production of mechanical designs.
The successful candidate thrives in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment and can efficiently transition completed engineering designs through formal production release, ensuring all deliverables meet configuration control and aerospace documentation standards. They will work closely with design engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and production teams to generate accurate, revision‑controlled drawings and specifications that bring designs from concept to flight‑ready hardware.
Candidates should have experience with design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) principles, rapid prototyping, and tooling or ground support equipment design to support high‑volume spacecraft assembly operations. An associate degree or technical diploma in mechanical drafting, design technology, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience—is desired.
Responsibilities
Create and revise detailed 2D drawings from 3D CAD models in SolidWorks.
Apply GD&T per ASME Y14.5 standards.
Generate assembly drawings using industry standard detail and exploded views, including item definition and application of general and flag notes.
Prepare and update BOMs with correct part numbers, materials, and quantities.
Follow engineering change processes (ECOs/ECRs) to maintain configuration control of models, drawings, and released engineering.
Work closely with engineers to translate conceptual designs and layouts into production‑ready documentation and coordinate with manufacturing and quality teams to resolve drawing or specification discrepancies.
Assist in creating tooling or fixturing drawings for manufacturing or assembly processes and occasionally support reverse engineering or modelling and drafting efforts for COTS hardware.
Check and self‑review drawings for dimensional accuracy, completeness, and compliance with aerospace standards.
Qualifications
Associate degree or diploma in mechanical drafting, engineering technology, CAD, or related technical field.
5+ years of experience as a mechanical designer or drafter. Experience with space vehicle design and/or ground support equipment is preferred.
Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D CAD and 2D drafting tools – creating, editing, and managing models and drawings of complex engineering assemblies.
Strong knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and how to apply it to aerospace parts and assemblies.
Understanding of materials and aerospace manufacturing methods, including machining, welding, sheet metal, and additive manufacturing.
Familiarity with PLM/PDM systems (e.g. Arena, Windchill, Agile) for revision control and release workflows and configuration management principles.
Basic understanding of inspection and quality processes.
Ability and desire to obtain your security clearance.
Ability to work onsite full time at the Willow campus.
Benefits In addition to compensation, York Space Systems is proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance along with PTO and a 401K.
