NVA General Practice An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students the opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners. Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting with surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. These externships are designed for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.
