Summary
Licensed Practical Nurse, under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager and the general supervision of the Professional, Registered Nurse (RN), assists in caring for patients and/or families with consideration of the aging process throughout Brown University Health, including all developmental stages and cultural patterns. Responsibilities
Safely deliver patient care under the supervision of a professional nurse, physician, or Advanced Practice Provider (APP).
Assist with the assessment of nursing care needs and implement the plan of care.
Perform selected procedures and treatments according to approved policies and protocols.
Facilitate access to care, promote population health, and coordinate transition of care from hospital or emergency department.
Collaborate across disciplines to coordinate patient care and monitor, record, and communicate patient conditions.
Delegate patient care to appropriate support staff and provide precepting for LPNs and medical assistants.
Participate in quality improvement projects and conduct quality assurance audits as assigned.
Insert intravenous lines and administer medication in accordance with the Brown University Health System-Wide Administration of Medications Policy.
Suctions patients (nasopharyngeal and oral) and records selected treatments and procedures.
Maintain patient and family confidentiality and serve as an active patient/family advocate.
Assist with identification of learning needs and develop plans to meet those needs.
Support and reinforce teaching by the RN, MD, APP, and/or pharmacist.
Identify cardiopulmonary arrest, initiate CPR, and follow emergency/code procedures.
Demonstrate adherence to universal precautions, safety programs, and infection control measures.
Check emergency equipment and report unsafe situations to the Clinical/Practice Manager.
Carry out safe lifting practices and utilize assistive devices when available.
Maintain an environment conducive to patient comfort and safety and report equipment maintenance needs.
Engage in life-long learning and maintain competency requirements according to nursing credentialing policy procedures.
Attend departmental and clinic activities, including meetings, quality improvement projects, and staff education programs.
Establish annual developmental goals in collaboration with the Clinical Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
Current licensure to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
Successful completion of the hospital's patient care delivery orientation program, including entry level credentialing of selected skills.
Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
Experience
Two years of medical/surgical nursing experience preferred.
Pediatric experience highly preferred in pediatric ambulatory settings.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Physical ability for extensive walking and standing.
Ability to lift, position, and assist patients with ambulatory needs as necessary.
