Job Description and Duties Under the general supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the incumbent will work as a first-line supervisor planning, coordinating, administering, and executing the work of a survey crew conducting preliminary, control, topographic, construction, and cadastral land surveys. The incumbent will train subordinates to perform land survey duties including operation of precision surveying instruments, proper surveying procedures, equipment maintenance, survey calculations, and note keeping. As a working first-line supervisor, the incumbent will also perform all required supervisor duties. Please refer to the Duty Statement for further details.

Working Conditions The job may require field work, including driving a vehicle to conduct normal work activities in all kinds of settings such as heavy freeway or highway traffic and off-road areas. Exposure to adverse conditions (terrain, heights, vegetation, insects, loud noises, dust, chemicals, extreme weather) is expected. Physical demands include hiking long distances, carrying equipment up to 40 pounds, pushing loads up to 80 pounds, stooping, bending, lifting, using cutting tools, and lifting and transporting equipment or material weighing up to 60 pounds. The position may be eligible for telework, subject to department policy and operational needs.

Special Requirements

The position requires a California Land Surveyor License, which must be provided prior to hire.

Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license and be able to operate state vehicles as required.

Minimum Requirements Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications stated in the Classification Specification, including possession of the relevant education, license, or certificate and required documentation.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to meeting minimum qualifications, candidates should possess an expert‑level understanding of land surveying, including knowledge of mathematics and basic science as applied to the profession.
