Field Service Technician

Location 930 South Business Park Drive, Port Arthur, TX 77640
Primary Function The Technician will perform electrical testing, maintenance, and start‑ups of high voltage substations. Assignments are closely supervised and designed to further develop employee job knowledge and abilities.
Duties & Responsibilities
Perform electrical testing services on power apparatus, substations, and switchgear including:
Protective relays and relaying systems
Circuit breakers
Power transformers
Current and potential transformers
Meters, transducers, and power system metering
Power cables
Grounding systems
Motors and motor starters
Station batteries and chargers
Alarm systems and annunciators
Perform troubleshooting and problem identification and analysis. Make recommendations regarding corrective action and/or repairs
Generate technical reports detailing services provided, problems found, and corrective action taken or recommended
Represent the company in a professional manner with regard to communicating and interfacing with clients
Communicate effectively with the company management team on a regular basis regarding project status and the scheduling of manpower and equipment
Make safety a top priority, realizing that the company has Zero Tolerance for those who do otherwise
Other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent (technician experience in the high voltage industry will be accepted in lieu of a degree)
Minimum 2 plus years of experience in the high voltage industry preferred
Skills and Knowledge
Demonstrated knowledge of the power triangle
Understanding of one‑line, three‑line, AC/DC schemes, and connection diagrams
Solid understanding of current transformer and potential transformer purposes
Basic current transformer tests
Typical AC & DC fundamentals
Working knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and NETA standards
Basic metering configurations and connections
Proven knowledge of vacuum vs. air circuit breakers and oil vs. gas circuit breakers
Understanding of PT, CCVT, and CT
Knowledge of power transformer major components
Motor ratings and testing of rotating machinery
Knowledge of capacitor banks
Electrical components, devices, symbols fundamentals
Communication skills (oral & written)
Understanding of protective relay types
Primary and secondary phasing knowledge
Team‑work ability
Microsoft Office proficiency (Outlook, Word, Excel)
Ability to work safely in hazardous high‑voltage environments, petrochemical plants, refineries, etc.
Valid driver’s license with clean record
TWIC card (or ability to obtain)
Pass pre‑employment drug, alcohol, background checks and ongoing random checks
Travel up to 25% with flexibility; frequent overtime may be required
Other Work Conditions
Work schedule may include long days, evening/weekend hours to meet customer requirements
Must work on feet throughout the shift
Work in austere conditions at times
May be required to lift up to 50 lbs.
Travel to job sites required
