Overview STEAMFITTER/PIPEFITTER, Repair & Maintenance, to perform work in all areas of pressure steam systems across the Institute, including installing, repairing, maintaining and troubleshooting a full range of steam, processed water, chilled water and compressed air systems. Responsible for maintenance of high- and low-pressure steam systems consisting of pressure reducing valves, traps, expansion joints, heating units, steam tables and boilers; removing and reinstalling pumps; installing, maintaining and servicing new and existing commercial and industrial HVAC process systems, processed water, chilled water and compressed air systems; and responding to emergency mechanical system calls; and performing all installation, maintenance, inspection and testing in accordance with applicable standards and requirements of OHSA 10 and/or established compliance requirements of the authority having jurisdiction.

Responsibilities

Perform maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of steam, processed water, chilled water and compressed air systems.

Maintain high- and low-pressure steam systems, including pressure reducing valves, traps, expansion joints, heating units, steam tables and boilers.

Remove and reinstall pumps; install, maintain and service new and existing HVAC process systems.

Respond to emergency mechanical system calls; perform installation, maintenance, inspection and testing per applicable standards.

Work in accordance with OHSA 10 and other jurisdictional compliance requirements.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and five-year apprenticeship; five years of pipefitting experience.

Willingness to obtain ASME welding certification for steel pipe.

Valid Driver’s License.

Ability to read blueprints, specifications, verbal instructions, or sketches; work independently with minimal supervision.

Ability to diagnose and correct defects on pipe systems; ability to electric arc weld all piping systems.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; ability to receive work orders, order materials, and complete tasks accurately; provide updates on work order status in writing.

Preferred: Pipefitter’s License.

Working Conditions Working conditions include ascending/descending stairs; traversing the campus; moving about the jobsite and machinery to access equipment; remaining stationary for extended periods; work from ladders, scaffolds and other aboveground locations; and using scissor lifts, articulating lifts and bucket trucks. PPE must be worn as required. Environment may include dust, odors, fumes, high noise, and temperature extremes. Work near steam and moving machinery in tight areas and confined spaces; work with chemicals and solvents; some work in research labs and animal facilities; some work outdoors in inclement weather.

Shift and Coverage Employees assigned to an irregular shift are considered essential personnel per MIT policy on Emergency Closing or Early Release. During emergencies, these employees are excused from their regularly scheduled work with supervisor authorization. Regularly scheduled employees may be required to work other shifts as needed.
