The City of Durham’s
Department of Water Management (DWM)
provides critical water and sewer services to over 309,000 residents. More than 375 dedicated employees work to ensure safe drinking water and effective wastewater management. We lead long-term planning, infrastructure development, environmental compliance testing, and public engagement in water conservation.
We have a vacancy for a Senior Plant Operations Specialist (Water Plant Operator II) on the 3rd shift, 11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m. This role primarily operates and maintains the Brown Water Treatment Plant, with potential coverage at the Williams Water Treatment Plant.
This position is for 3rd shift, working Monday to Friday, and is subject to recall for weather emergencies.
Responsibilities include work at Brown Water Plant, elevated and ground storage tanks, and three pressure zones with associated pump and storage facilities. Certified operators monitor treatment processes to ensure efficient operations and work independently during shifts.
You must be readily available by phone and able to work standby/recall as needed.
Operate, monitor, and adjust plant equipment; perform routine maintenance; collect samples and conduct lab analysis; interpret data; ensure safety and operational compliance.
Inspect, calibrate, and maintain plant equipment; perform minor repairs and lubrication; report maintenance needs.
Review operating policies; clean equipment and facilities; manage chemical handling.
Maintain reports, logs, work orders; update databases and online systems; ensure documentation accuracy.
Minimum qualifications include:
NC Grade C Surface Water Treatment Operators License
At least 2 years of experience in a water treatment facility or similar environment
High School Diploma or equivalent
Valid, unrestricted NC driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 60 days if from another state
Intermediate math and chemistry skills for process adjustments and record keeping
Willingness to be on call for emergencies
Preferred qualifications include:
NC Grade B Surface Water Treatment Operators License
SCADA literacy
OSHA certifications (Confined Space, Lock Out/Tag Out, Blood-borne Pathogens, etc.)
