Provides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving maintenance of highways and bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Manages the district Bridge Follow Up Action Plan. Assists with project planning and the development of policies and procedures for the area of responsibility. Works with governmental officials, consultants, contractors, and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Transportation Specialist III and IV: In addition to the above, provide technical expertise, oversight/coordination of district transportation programs, district Bridge Action Follow Up Plan, and participate in project planning and policy development. Schedule and priorities are established by the employee; issues are rarely referred to the supervisor. Transportation Specialist V: Provides planning, oversight, high-level technical expertise, and coordination for transportation programs, develops/interprets guidelines, regulations, laws, policies and procedures, and assumes direct accountability for work products. Transportation Specialist I and II
– Coordinates programs/projects to improve efficiency; prepares bridge inspection follow-up worksheets; provides technical coordination for maintenance operations; maintains bridge inventory files; travels to districts for site visits; performs other duties as assigned. Transportation Specialist III
– Adds technical oversight for district bridge-related activities and follows up on action items; performs other duties as assigned. Transportation Specialist IV
– Performs advanced technical activities for inspection and appraisal of bridge structures; oversees data collection and project coordination; assists in short- and long-range maintenance planning; performs other duties as assigned. Experience requirements
– 2 years (I), 4 years (II), 5 years (III–V) in transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, and bridge inspection. Experience may be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time work. Licenses and certifications
Valid driver’s license required; position requires driving a state vehicle. Knowledge: materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance; program/project planning and management; bridge inspection and appraisal methods; preventative maintenance methods Skills: planning, coordinating multiple projects, maintaining relationships, analyzing data, and maintaining confidential records Physical requirements and working conditions
Light work: lifting up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently up to 10 lbs Walking: moving between sites Close visual acuity: reading and data entry Pre-employment physical may be required Drug testing: must pass a pre-employment drug test; random drug testing may apply for safety-impact positions Bridge inspection requires completion of a comprehensive training course or NICET Level III/IV within 1 year of hire Qualifications
