University of Southern California ( USC ) is a leading private research university located in Los Angeles. The USC department of Facilities Planning and Management (FPM) – Operations Grounds Services is seeking a Landscape Supervisor to join its team.
Responsibilities
Plan, design and manage in‑house and grounds‑related projects (e.g., color bed plantings, turf renovation) and collaborate with department project managers.
Design and oversee the installation and maintenance of large conversion projects (e.g., climate adaptive, native plants). Manage estimated budgets and ensure project completion prior to deadlines.
Inspect and evaluate assigned areas, provide feedback to team to ensure public safety and an aesthetically pleasing environment. Create performance metrics and ensure compliance with university and departmental policies.
Manage landscaping budget, purchase materials, supplies and equipment, and authorize overtime as needed.
Provide basic and advanced technical‑skill training to team members; counsel and mentor, recommending disciplinary actions as necessary.
Participate in university stakeholder committee meetings; stay current with best practices in waste operations and pilot new equipment from vendors.
Encourage a workplace culture where all employees are valued and encouraged to contribute through ideas, words and actions in accordance with the USC Code of Ethics.
Supervise landscaping staff, screen and interview applicants, determine hiring decisions, train staff and provide performance feedback and documentation.
Assess landscaping workload, plan or schedule staff accordingly, develop annual maintenance and planting activities, and authorize overtime as appropriate.
Train and support staff and team leaders; integrate the Pay for Skills program, verify completion of training requirements.
Monitor workflow for efficiency and timeliness, set priorities based on landscape conditions, weather and special events, and make adjustments as needed.
Review work for quality, completion, accuracy and adherence to internal operating policies and procedures; address problems and provide feedback.
Provide technical assistance to staff for training purposes and problem‑solving; interpret departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Determine costs of equipment, materials and supplies; order items and liaise with vendors on product services and delivery.
Maintain specialized equipment and provide staff training on its utilization; coordinate preventive maintenance and recommend new equipment acquisitions.
Contribute to the development of policies, procedures and internal systems that support unit work; define needs and coordinate development of manual or automated systems.
Ensure records are kept up‑to‑date and maintained in accordance with applicable regulations.
Maintain unit statistics on productivity and generate reports for managerial review.
Plan and administer income and expense budgets, develop projections, track actuals, and adjust operating plans to address variances.
Develop and implement security‑related procedures such as office opening and closing routines, key controls, and coordinate security activities with University Public Safety Department.
Perform other related duties as assigned or requested; the university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
In emergency situations, report to duty in accordance with the university’s Emergency Operations Plan; assist in response efforts and mobilize staff as needed.
The work schedule for this position is Monday – Friday 4:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 5:00 AM – 1:30 PM; schedules may change at any time to accommodate business needs.
Minimum Qualifications
High School or equivalent; combined education/experience may substitute.
6 years of experience in landscaping.
3 years of experience in a leadership role.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of landscaping and progressive leadership/management/supervision experience.
Experience with project management, budget planning, cost estimation and meeting deadlines.
Proficient in horticultural decision‑making.
Proficient in people management, coaching and de‑escalating employee issues.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Knowledge of applicable laws, principles and regulations.
Proficient computer literacy; familiarity with MS Office and other operating systems.
Experience with CMMS (e.g., Assetworks).
Ability to collaborate with a wide‑ranging group of people.
Ability to remain agile and adaptable with changing priorities.
Active/valid/unrestricted CA driver’s license in accordance with USC’s Driver Vehicle Safety Policy.
Must obtain a Qualified Applicator License (QAL) within 6 months of hire; training will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s Degree.
8 years of experience within a college/university environment.
Knowledge of the UPC (University Park Campus/Main Campus) and/or HSC Campuses (Health Science).
Ability to speak Spanish fluently.
Familiarity with cultivation of native plants.
GIS and CAD knowledge.
Proven leadership ability.
Certifications: APPA Supervisor's Tool kit seminar, ISA Certified Arborist, Certified Landscape Irrigation, Auditor TIA, California Native Plant Landscaper and/or Qualified Tree Risk Assessor.
Salary Range The annual base salary range for this position is $72,426.46 – $86,000. Compensation considers scope and responsibilities, work experience, education, key skills, internal peer alignment, and external market and organizational factors.
