Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties
Transport Engineer Specialist I: Assists in writing general notes, specifications and provisions.
Performs advanced and specialized design work.
Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors.
Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transport Engineer Specialist II: In addition to the above essential duties: Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.
Trains less experienced technicians.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education : High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience : Transport Engineer Specialist I:
6 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Transport Engineer Specialist II:
7 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications : Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate, issued upon employment.

Transport Engineer Specialist II: In addition to the above: Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures
Developing, interpreting, and implementing policies, procedures, and technical information
Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
Subject to noise
Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
