Transportation Engineer Tech I: Performs basic design work and calculations. Performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Transportation Engineer Tech II: Performs intermediate design work and calculations; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties: The essential duties for the Transportation Engineer Tech I include: Performs basic design work. Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments. Prepares field notes. Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps. Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans. Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System. Works on reproduction of plans. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. The essential duties for the Transportation Engineer Tech II include all the above and: Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians. Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features. Performs intermediate design work. Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications. Writes general notes, specifications and provisions. Minimum Qualifications: Education : High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience : Transportation Engineer Tech I: No experience required. Transportation Engineer Tech II: 2 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications : Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Competencies: The required competencies for the Transportation Engineer Tech I include: Some Basic Knowledge of Basic roadway design Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures Higher mathematics Interactive graphic and design information systems Proficient Skill in Performing basic design and drafting Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems Ability to Follow verbal and written instructions The required competencies for the Transportation Engineer Tech II include all the above and: Considerable Knowledge of Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities Higher mathematics Proficient Skill in Performing advanced drafting Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools Standing-prolonged periods of time Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels;receive information by oral communication Conditions of Employment: Please read the standard conditions of employment for all positions: Standard Conditions of Employment (TxDOT) This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
