We are currently hiring three Directional Drill Bores Operators for multiple locations in Lancaster, Wilkes-Barre, and Towanda, Pennsylvania.
Compensation:
This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt union position with a base pay rate between $34.87 and $40.70 per hour, plus a comprehensive benefits package. Overtime (OT) may be available based on workload and scheduling needs, but is not guaranteed. Job Overview You will play a key role in underground construction, primarily supporting the installation of fiber optic infrastructure. This position is responsible for operating and managing horizontal directional drilling (HDD) activities, ensuring the safe and accurate placement of conduit and cable. Core duties include: Steering and Operations: Operate directional drilling guidance systems and controls to accurately navigate the drill head along a prescribed bore path while avoiding underground utilities and infrastructure. Site Assessment: Perform pre-job site surveys to evaluate soil conditions, identify existing utilities, and gather data critical to project planning. Planning & Collaboration: Work closely with construction managers and field crews to develop and refine bore plans that align with client specifications and minimize risk. Monitoring & Adjustments: Track drilling progress in real-time, adjusting steering parameters as needed to ensure alignment, bore accuracy, and cable protection. Problem Solving: Troubleshoot and resolve on-site challenges such as underground obstructions, varying soil types, or unexpected utility conflicts. Post-Drill Verification: Conduct inspections following completion to confirm bore accuracy and the safe installation of fiber optic or other utility lines. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of bore paths, as-built drawings, daily activities, and equipment maintenance. Safety Compliance: Follow all company, local, and industry safety protocols to promote a secure job site for all crew members. Equipment Maintenance: Operate and maintain HDD equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and internal service schedules. Labor Support: Assist in general construction tasks including conduit installation, vault placement, and cable pulling when not engaged in active drilling operations. Communication: Provide updates to site supervisors on work progress, site conditions, and any safety concerns. Perform other duties as assigned to support the crew and project goals. Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older. High school Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience. Valid CDL Class A with tanker endorsement. 2+ years of experience operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment in telecom or utility construction. Familiarity with underground utility locating practices and safe digging procedures (potholing, One Call systems, etc.). Ability to read and interpret bore plans, utility maps, and construction drawings. Proficient in the use of mud mixing systems and tracking systems (e.g., DigiTrak, Subsite). Working knowledge of health, safety and environmental protection practices and procedures as they apply to related construction processes. Must be able to track and communicate daily production and materials. Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic equipment maintenance. OSHA 10/30 certification preferred (or willingness to obtain). Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team. Willingness to travel or work extended hours as project needs require. Successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license (cannot be provisional). Successful completion of a pre-employment background check and drug screen. Successful completion of Motor Vehicles Record (MVR) check, which reviews the candidate\'s driving history, including any past violations, accidents, or suspensions, to ensure compliance with the Company\'s policy and legal driving requirements. Physical Abilities and Working Conditions Routinely required to: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform work on uneven surfaces. Ability to sit, stand, stoop, and bend for extended periods. Work in confined spaces and remote outdoor locations. Work with arms above shoulder level. Manual dexterity in hands, fingers, and arms for reaching, climbing, balancing, and using hand/power tools and controls. Vision abilities must include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be capable of safely operating vehicles and heavy machinery. Regularly able to lift, carry or transport equipment and materials up to 50 lbs. Ability to move throughout the work environment as needed. Must possess clear and effective verbal and written communication skills. Occasionally required to: Use ladders for access or work at height. Operate a computer using a keyboard and mouse for documentation or communication.
