Position Title: Instructional Specialist 1, Biology Assists in the administration and maintenance of a college instructional laboratory. Works with the department chair and faculty to develop and provide various, specialized educational experiences designed to support and enhance students’ learning, and further their knowledge in biological sciences. Ensures proper storage of all materials and scientific equipment.

Job Summary The Instructional Specialist will maintain a safe, functional laboratory environment, provide technical guidance to faculty and students, and support the development of lab curricula and student projects. Responsibilities include specimen collection, animal care and maintenance, equipment upkeep, safety compliance, and collaboration with faculty and work‑study students.

Required Qualifications

AA/AS degree in biology or related field with coursework in chemistry, cell biology, plant and animal anatomy, physiology, and taxonomy.

Minimum of two years full‑time directly related experience with laboratory equipment commonly found in biology labs.

Equivalency of education and experience that enables performance of all position duties is considered.

Knowledge and Skills

Considerable technical knowledge in biology laboratory areas.

Working knowledge of laboratory instruction principles, microscope use, chemical solution preparation, and autoclave operation.

Strong communication skills to interact with faculty and students.

Familiarity with personal computers and related database and word‑processing programs.

Abilities

Set up and maintain laboratory and equipment in a safe, clean, and functional manner.

Work independently to set up student projects that meet instructional goals.

Instruct students in equipment use.

Communicate effectively with students and faculty in formal and informal settings.

Work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum one year of experience working with students in a lab or instructional setting involving mentoring activities.

BA/BS degree in biology or related field is preferred.

Molecular biology lab skills are preferred, with familiarity with common microorganisms and ability to safely maintain potentially pathogenic subcultures.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical Skills and Abilities

Use of computer and operation of laboratory equipment.

Effective communication with staff and students in person, over the phone, and in group settings.

Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, lifting, guiding, and carrying light to medium weight (10‑50 pounds) materials or equipment; occasional sustained effort.

Working Conditions

Work performed indoors; unavoidable short exposure to odors from preservatives, microorganisms, cleaning agents, etc. and potential exposure to lab chemicals.

Travel off campus required to collect plants or animal specimens or to pick up other miscellaneous materials for labs.

Travel may be required to transport materials and supplies to other campus locations.

Collaborate with full‑ and part‑time faculty and instructors to develop laboratory experiments that support classroom learning, develop and set up student projects that meet curriculum goals.

Procure required specimens and/or supplies for use in various laboratory experiments or experiences.

Research and verify legal regulations, permits, and reporting requirements appropriate for specimens or materials for compliance with state and federal agencies.

Maintain permits for state and federal fish and game departments to keep study skins and other relevant materials.

Collect plants and animals needed for labs; provide care, cleaning, and feeding/watering of laboratory animals and plants.

Recruit students to participate in lab experiences—train and orient students on experiment procedures, safety requirements, and process guidelines.

Prepare and assemble materials and equipment for student use, set up and take down laboratory materials, equipment, and supplies.

Perform regular maintenance on laboratory equipment and machines as needed and coordinate repairs; maintain work areas in a clean, safe condition according to biosafety standards.

Calculate and prepare media, cultures, and chemicals for lab classes.

Maintain stock of needed supplies, parts, and tools; obtain bids, purchase supplies, place orders according to college purchasing guidelines; reconcile purchase card transactions monthly.

Provide access to the Student Study Area, oversee its use, and keep it clean and safe.

Ensure compliance with all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and labeling per Global Harmonized System (GHS) and college hazard communication policies; inventory and monitor chemicals.

Serve as lead, training, scheduling, and overseeing work‑study student employees; give performance input to the department chair and/or dean.

Perform basic maintenance and oversight for the greenhouse and specimens used for courses and labs.

Perform other related duties as assigned.
