Heartland Human Care Services is seeking a
Senior Financial Analyst
to take on a leadership role in financial planning, reporting, and analysis. In this position, you’ll maintain the general ledger, manage month‑end close, and develop financial models that inform strategic decisions. You’ll also prepare projections, conduct research, and deliver analysis that guides leadership at the highest level.
Beyond the numbers, you’ll serve as a trusted advisor, partnering with program teams to provide financial guidance, improve processes, and strengthen outcomes. Success in this role requires not only strong technical and analytical skills, but also the ability to communicate complex financial information in a clear, actionable way.

Essential Functions – Duties & Responsibilities
In collaboration with program leadership, develop budget proposals and budget modifications.
Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, funder‑specific requirements and relevant financial and legal regulations for company teams and provide training and capacity building to support knowledge transfer to program and operational staff.
Oversee accounting tasks related to daily, month‑end, and year‑end close.
Oversee grant management for a portfolio of awards, including budget preparation, cost projections, report preparation, and spending analysis. Ensure compliance with AP/AR, billing and reporting requirements.
Work with program leaders to develop fiscal year budgets for consolidation into the organizational budget.
Ensure high‑quality reporting for leadership and board audiences in collaboration with the Senior Director of Finance.
Develop and maintain relationships with funders.
Research and develop a strong knowledge of government funding sources.
Provide guidance and support to Financial Analysts and Staff Accountant on financial processes and reporting.
Recommend and help implement enhancements to financial systems, workflows, and reporting capabilities.
Other duties may be assigned.
Education And Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited institution. Master’s in Finance or MBA is preferred.
CPA is a plus.
7+ years of experience in accounting or finance; non‑profit accounting experience is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A)
Working knowledge of GAAP.
Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel.
Excellent communication skills; strong networker, convener, relationship builder and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with professional and diplomatic manner.
High degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self‑motivation, and analytical ability.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange, Windows operating systems, and other software routinely used by Heartland Human Care Services.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to work independently and remain self‑motivated with minimal direct supervision.
Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.
Work Arrangement This role is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. It is expected the person would meet for in‑person meetings when needed or at the request of others.
Work Environment
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Each program site operates on a 24/7 basis, 365 days per year. To meet both the needs of participants and contractual obligations, employees are required to be flexible in regard to scheduling and work location.
Program sites are located throughout the Chicago area, including the North and South sides of Chicago, as well as the suburbs.
Physical Demands
Regularly required to talk and hear.
Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk.
Must be able to stoop, kneel, and/or crawl.
Regularly required to use hands to key, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
Must occasionally lift, and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Must have unrestricted ability to provide physical restraint.
Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
