About the Position

The incumbent performs the full range of executive and administrative duties in support of the State’s Attorney and Deputy State’s Attorneys, relieving them of considerable administrative detail. The incumbent acts as a liaison between professionals and para‑professionals, exercises independent judgment and action in accordance with agency policies, and demonstrates tact, diplomacy and competence in dealing with the public, elected officials, and county officials.

About the Agency

The Office of the State’s Attorney is dedicated to securing justice for all residents of Prince George’s County, serving nearly one million residents with the highest level of experience, integrity, and professionalism. The legal department is divided into multiple divisions, each with jurisdiction over different facets of criminal law.

Responsibilities

  • Act as liaison between the State’s Attorney, Deputy State’s Attorneys, Assistant State’s Attorneys, professionals, and support staff.
  • Inform staff of policies and procedures implemented by the State’s Attorney and Deputy State’s Attorney.
  • Compose and type correspondence, memoranda, agendas, procedural and legal documents, and reports of highly sensitive and confidential subject matters.
  • Prepare routine correspondence in accordance with established office procedures.
  • Type with a high degree of speed and accuracy, ensuring proper format and appropriate terminology.
  • Edit all copies to ensure an efficient product is presented for signature and assemble needed materials to accompany correspondence.
  • Complete assignments with minimal instructions, using various informational resources to accomplish tasks and using knowledge of the Judicial and Criminal Justice Systems, local, state, municipalities, and federal agencies.
  • Keep all State’s Attorney and Deputy State’s Attorney projects, correspondence, and administrative files confidential, organized, and accessible for easy retrieval.
  • Purge filing system in accordance with established office procedures.
  • Use discretion in prioritizing the needs of the State’s Attorney and Deputy State’s Attorney in a most efficient and professional manner.
  • Keep the State’s Attorney and Deputy State’s Attorney informed on daily basic operations and brief as to what significant matters need to be apprised of.
  • Establish and maintain a log of incoming correspondence and documents to ensure timely action and review outgoing correspondence for procedural and grammatical accuracy, policy, and factual preparation; disseminate mail to appropriate parties for appropriate response.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, Public or Business Administration, or a field closely related to the legal area.
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in government or business.
  • Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education, and experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of secretarial/administrative experience involving public work, office management, and confidential information handling.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and methods and their efficient application to administrative details.
  • Knowledge of modern research techniques, methods, and procedures.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance to subordinate personnel in routine activities of the department.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and submit oral and written reports on research findings.
  • Ability to analyze the functions and procedures of the division and suggest modifications and improvements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, county officials, and the public.
