Travel Unit Description – Operating Room (OR) – Transplant Specialty Type of Care: High-acuity surgical services specializing in
solid organ transplants
including
liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, and lung . Supports a wide range of surgical specialties such as cardiovascular, thoracic, neuro, ortho, trauma, plastics, and robotics in a
Level I teaching facility . Focused on complex surgical procedures, multidisciplinary collaboration, and precision-based perioperative care. Patient Population: Neonates through geriatrics. Includes patients undergoing organ transplantation, multi-organ retrieval, and complex surgical interventions. Average Case Volume: Approximately
55–60 procedures per day
across
18 operating rooms . Shift & Schedule: 8-hour shifts (Days). Call required; rotating weekends and holidays as scheduled. Float to other OR specialties as needed to meet unit demand. Primary Responsibilities: Provide comprehensive intraoperative nursing care for transplant and complex surgical cases. Serve as scrub and circulating nurse during organ transplant procedures (not procurement-only). Ensure compliance with
AORN standards , universal protocols, and sterile technique. Coordinate with anesthesia, surgical, and perfusion teams for patient safety and procedural flow. Manage equipment, supplies, and instrumentation required for transplant and specialty surgeries. Maintain accurate surgical counts, specimen labeling, and documentation in accordance with regulatory standards. Participate in orientation and training of students and new staff in this
teaching facility . Special Equipment & Systems: Documentation:
Epic Medication System:
Pyxis Key Equipment: Cell saver, electrosurgical units, fiber-optic light systems, Hana table, Steris systems. Safety Competencies: Laser safety, radiation safety, infection control, universal protocol, and malignant hyperthermia response. Certifications Required: BLS ACLS CNOR (preferred) Skills & Experience Requirements: Minimum 2 years of Operating Room experience . MUST have direct transplant operating experience (NOT just procurement). Proficient in surgical preparation, scrubbing, and circulating for organ transplant procedures. Competent in general, vascular, thoracic, neuro, ortho/spine, and robotic cases preferred. Prior teaching hospital experience strongly preferred. Professional Expectations: Maintain readiness to participate in transplant and multi-specialty surgical cases. Demonstrate ability to prioritize in high-stress, multidisciplinary environments. Engage in precepting, mentorship, and clinical education as part of a teaching institution. Orientation & Additional Information: Orientation:
