Field Applications Engineer - OSP Applications
Lightera, LLC, a leading manufacturer of optical fiber, fiber cable, and connectivity solutions, has an immediate opening for a Field Applications Engineer.
The Field Applications Engineer (FAE) will provide post‑sales and pre‑sales technical support for customers using Lightera outside plant fiber optic cables. This position will support Middle Mile, Regional, Metro, Data Center, Rural, and FTTX fiber deployments. We are seeking a customer‑centric individual who can provide training, presentations, and technical support both at client installations and virtually, by understanding and applying expert knowledge of Lightera products and their applications, as well as investigating quality complaints onsite to help determine root cause.
Responsibilities
Provide training to both customers and sales teams as a subject‑matter expert in outside plant cable construction methods and procedures, and in optical fiber splicing and testing for both single fiber and ribbon fiber applications.
Present products and solutions (pre‑sales) to prospective customers, and recommend a solution meeting customer’s pain points.
Recommend new products and solutions to PLM based on unmet customer pain points.
Gather and document competitive intelligence to sales, operations, and product management.
Develop accurate customer‑facing installation instructions and applications engineering documents.
Support new product developments including installation testing and qualification for outside plant cable designs and Fttx/Ftth/data center fiber solutions.
Lead customer complaint investigations and follow up regarding corrective actions.
Negotiate and/or facilitate negotiations of warranty claim resolutions functioning as the intermediary between the customer and LIGHTERA.
Document key activities and customer interactions weekly.
Travel requirements are approximately 20%–30% of calendar days in North America, occasionally requiring flexibility on short notice to meet customer demands.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science, or Construction Management, or equivalent work experience in power utility, telecom, or outside plant cable construction.
Willingness to learn or expert understanding of optical fiber testing, fusion splicing, fiber optic cable installation and installation equipment, and applications of fiber optic cables in communications networks.
Aptitude and interest to perform “hands on” work such as fiber optic cable handling and installation, fusion splicing, and optical test measurements.
Self‑directed and able to function efficiently with remote supervision.
Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
Effective and diplomatic communication skills with customers.
Strong presentation skills – verbal and written.
Ability and willingness to balance multiple priorities efficiently and effectively.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint).
Willingness to work in varied weather conditions, occasionally standing for extended periods of time performing hands‑on field work.
Desired Qualifications
Minimum of two (2) years in manufacturing or field technical support or applications engineering of communications or optical fiber‑based products.
Proficient in analyzing and accurately interpreting OTDR measurement traces.
Expert understanding of fiber optic OSP cable technologies, optical fiber technologies, optical connectivity technologies, installation, and testing.
Passport enabling travel globally.
