Position Overview The SCADA Engineer will implement and support SCADA and plant network control systems for utility‑scale solar, wind, and battery energy storage assets. Responsibilities include architecting secure control networks, integrating field devices and grid interfaces, commissioning new sites, and ensuring high availability, data quality, and cyber compliance across an operating fleet.
General Responsibilities SCADA Design and Integration
Collaborate with SCADA contractor to develop site SCADA architecture, I/O lists, point databases, cause‑and‑effect matrices, and network drawings for wind, solar, BESS, and substation systems.
Configure HMI/SCADA platforms, historians, alarming, reporting, dashboards, and KPIs for operations and asset performance.
Integrate PLCs/RTUs and plant controllers with inverters, turbine controllers, relays, meters, meteorological stations, and BMS/EMS.
Tune plant‑level controls (active/reactive power, Volt/VAR, PF control, AGC/ramp‑rate, frequency‑watt, curtailment).
Set up reliable time synchronization (PTP/NTP/IRIG‑B) and GPS clocks.
Commissioning and Operations
Lead FAT/SAT, network and protocol testing, point‑to‑point checkout, and performance verification.
Oversee delivery of grid interconnection telemetry and control to utilities/ISOs (e.g., ICCP, DNP3), including acceptance testing and model validation.
Provide Tier 2/3 support, incident response, root‑cause analysis, and on‑call coverage; drive MTTR reduction and reliability improvements.
Manage changes, configuration baselines and maintain as‑built documentation, MOP/SOPs; train operators and site technicians.
Design and maintain OT networks (layer 2/3, fiber/serial, cellular, microwave); ensure redundancy and QoS for control traffic.
Administer data historians and data pipelines; maintain data quality, retention, and integrations with APM/CMMS/BI tools.
Build scripts and small tools to automate testing, data validation, and reporting.
Cybersecurity and Compliance
Apply defense‑in‑depth and least‑privilege principles; harden endpoints, servers, and network devices; manage patching and backups.
Implement firewall rules, VPNs, segmentation, VLANs, and secure remote access; monitor logs and alerts.
Support compliance with ISA/IEC 62443, NERC CIP, and regional standards; lead audits.
Vendor and Stakeholder Coordination
Coordinate with EPCs, OEMs, utilities/ISOs, integrators, and internal teams from design through handover.
Review vendor submittals and ensure conformance to specifications, grid codes, and cybersecurity requirements.
Required Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Controls/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
3+ years hands‑on SCADA/controls experience in power, renewable energy, substation automation, or industrial OT.
Proficiency with Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3, OPC UA/DA; familiarity with ICCP/TASE.2 and IEC 61850 (MMS/GOOSE).
Experience with SCADA/HMI platforms (Ignition, AVEVA/Wonderware, OSI Monarch) and historians (OSIsoft PI, AVEVA PI, Canary, Ignition).
PLC/RTU configuration (SEL RTAC, Siemens S7/TIA Portal) and basic HMI development.
OT networking skills: switching, routing, VLANs, firewalls, VPNs, serial/fiber media, time sync.
Preferred Skills
Scripting and data skills: SQL, Python, PowerShell; experience with dashboards/reports.
