DMC University Laboratories Overview DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system providing services to the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. Founded in 1993, it comprises Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, two rapid‑response hospital laboratories, Centralized Stat Lab, Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and full‑service outreach infrastructure, including patient service centers, remote ambulatory laboratories, marketing staff, courier system, and billing department. DMCUL serves the entire Southeast Michigan market and is growing rapidly, offering a test menu of over 1,000 tests—more than 99% performed in‑house—with high‑end specialty tests. The laboratory also provides reference services to many other healthcare systems in Southeast Michigan and several out‑of‑state facilities.
Summary Description Under general supervision, performs quantitative and qualitative laboratory tests on patient specimens according to standard laboratory procedures. Analyzes test results, prepares samples for testing, calculates findings, and maintains records. Prepares and validates solutions, reagents, media stains, and other materials used in the testing process. Processes and tests all types of laboratory specimens; reviews and reports lab results; performs operational duties, maintenance, and advanced troubleshooting of laboratory instrumentation and equipment; serves as a resource to other laboratory personnel.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an approved college or university and/or graduation from an accredited school of medical technology, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489, or qualification as a Medical Technologist by achieving a satisfactory grade on a HHS examination prior to 2/28/92 42 CFR 493.1491. This meets CLIA regulations for high‑complexity testing.
Preferred: 6 months to 1 year experience as a medical laboratory technologist or clinical laboratory scientist in an acute‑care facility.
Required: Registered or registry eligible with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT or CSMLS) within 12 months of hire. Equivalency evaluation by ECE, NACES or AICE for non‑US trained personnel must be completed within 30 days of hire. Licensure as required by state.
Skills Required
Analytical ability to interpret and analyze test results.
Interpersonal skills to work effectively with all areas of the physician office.
Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate laboratory equipment.
Visual acuity for closely examining specimens.
