Overview
Physician Assistant position in the Department of Surgery focused on Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. The PA will manage inpatient care for the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Service, support general surgery services, participate in trauma resuscitations and surgical consultations, coordinate procedures, discharge planning, and ongoing patient follow-up within an interdisciplinary team. Responsibilities
Assess health needs, plan and evaluate care for patients on the general surgery services and in the surgical intensive care unit. Participate in inpatient sign-out at the beginning and end of shifts; follow up with General Surgery teams/residents/attending physicians. Engage in trauma resuscitations and perform surgical consultations on potential general surgery patients. Coordinate care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations and interventional procedures); obtain consults as needed; discharge patients with discharge summaries, instructions, and medications when appropriate. Triages phone calls; reviews critical labs; follows up on results with patients and medical staff. Obtain comprehensive medical histories and perform initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments; contribute to treatment plans for hospitalized patients. Demonstrate advanced medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication, timely documentation, and ongoing professional development. Under supervision of the Chief of Trauma, Burns, and Critical Care Services and the Trauma Medical Director, participate in comprehensive care across ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multidisciplinary coordination, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. What It Takes to be Successful
Required: Current, active, and unrestricted Physician Assistant license in California. A current DEA number; current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications. ATLS certification within six months of hire. Practice agreements completed and on file in the Department; ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire. HIPAA training and other center-mrequired trainings; annual TB screening and tests to meet JCAHO requirements. Understanding of privacy, confidentiality, and security policies for PHI and sensitive information. Strong customer service skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System. Excellent written and verbal communication, ability to prepare clear medical reports and progress notes; ability to train in use of specialized medical equipment and procedures. Ability to work at a pace appropriate to workload; flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, and other personnel. Preferred: Experience in Trauma or Critical Care; surgical scrubbing, draping, retracting, exposing, clamping, ligating, and suturing; bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
