Job Description And Duties Under supervision of a Branch Chief (a Senior Transportation Planner), the incumbent, in a learner capacity, assists in the development and updating of the State Freight Plan, implementation of the California Sustainable Freight Action Plan, the coordination of the freight outreach activities, and other actions supporting the Department’s freight planning responsibilities. The incumbent may serve as a liaison to assigned Caltrans District(s) and partner agencies within those Districts, an assigned freight mode, and/or focused topic area(s).
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required. The SOQ serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. Please follow the instructions below; failure to include and complete the SOQ as instructed may result in the SOQ not being considered and in disqualification from the interview. Resumes and cover letters will not take the place of the SOQ. The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages in length, and 12‑point Arial font.
Background And Experience In Transportation Planning Summarize your educational background and professional experience in transportation planning. Highlight any specific projects or areas of focus (e.g., transit planning, active transportation, long‑range planning, equity analysis) and your role in those efforts.
Technical Writing Describe your experience preparing technical documents related to transportation planning. Include examples of the types of documents you’ve developed (e.g., reports, grant applications, environmental studies, planning documents), the intended audience, and how you tailored the content for clarity and impact.
Software Proficiency Describe the types of tools and software you have used in your work as a transportation planner. This may include mapping tools, project management software, presentation or visualization programs, or other planning‑related applications. How have these tools supported your planning work?
Coordination And Facilitation Skills Provide an example of a time when you coordinated or facilitated a meeting, stakeholder group, or public outreach effort. What was your role, how did you ensure productive engagement, and what was the outcome?
