Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust are looking for highly motivated and dynamic Operating Department Practitioners and Nurses who are passionate about delivering outstanding surgical care. The closing date is 21 November 2025.
Theatre Practitioner ODP/ RN As part of our robust Trust preceptorship programme we provide a 12‑month graduate programme specifically designed to aid newly qualified nurses and ODPs, with 6 paid study days per annum followed by continued development. Our Trust works in close partnership with Huddersfield University, providing postgraduate learning and development opportunities.
Main duties of the job
Prepare an operating theatre/anaesthetic room for surgery, ensuring all instrumentation, equipment and supplies are ready and waste is minimised; for anaesthetics, ensure all necessary and emergency equipment is available and in working order.
Record the patient's theatre episode of care in the Electronic Patients Record (EPR) and Bluespier record accurately and timely.
Act as a preceptor / mentor for student ODPs, student nurses, trainee associate nurses and ATPs within your area of expertise.
Work as a team member without supervision and supervise and mentor junior staff to run an operating list.
Perform scrub, circulating and/or anaesthetic PACU duties within the specialist area, delegating tasks to other staff appropriately.
Comply with all policies and procedures, including Health and Safety, COSSH, incident reporting and the Data Protection Act.
Job responsibilities
Act in the scrub, circulating, anaesthetic or PACU role daily within your scope of practice.
Maintain a clean, safe working environment after use and between cases, ensuring safe disposal of all clinical and other waste.
Maintain high standards of nursing care and report to team leader if standards are not maintained.
Maintain appropriate stock levels, ensuring economy in monitoring stock.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised programmes of care.
Recognise changes in patient conditions that require intervention and refer appropriately.
Act as a link practitioner within a defined specialty or interest area.
Assist with patient transfer within the department, positioning patients using correct procedures in line with local manual‑handling protocols.
Professional Duties
Work within the HCPC code of professional practice and all Trust policies, procedures and guidelines.
Promote and protect the interest and dignity of patients.
Managerial Duties
Support the team leader in risk assessment, minimisation and reporting of incidents and near‑misses.
Manage verbal complaints, informing senior staff and referring on if unresolved.
Investigate incidents or complaints as required.
Maintain effective communication with the multi‑disciplinary team.
Recognise, prevent and manage conflicts, reporting to team leader if unresolved.
Delegate tasks appropriately based on team members' skills and capabilities.
Act as an enthusiastic role model, providing leadership, guidance and advice to staff.
Contribute to the development of the clinical area, proposing ideas to improve patient care and experience.
Managing Self
Participate in regular supervision and mandatory training.
Develop and agree on a personal development plan with your line manager using the Trust Appraisal system.
Comply with all Trust policies, procedures and protocols.
Maintain professional conduct and appearance at all times.
Ensure ongoing maintenance of professional registration.
Person Specification Qualifications / Training
1st Level HCPC or NMC Registration
Diploma/ Degree in Operating Department Practice or Adult Nursing
Knowledge, Experience & Expertise
Knowledge of conditions and treatment within sphere of practice.
Responsibility to plan own post‑basic education.
Knowledge of national and local initiatives.
Previous theatre experience.
Experience as a student assessor/supervisor.
Communication and Relationships (Including Management Responsibilities)
Ability to motivate staff.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Planning and organising teaching sessions for junior staff.

£31,049 to £37,796 a year, pro rata.
