Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Cellular Pathology
Closing date: 24 November 2025. We have an exciting opportunity for a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with expertise in Diagnostic Cytology, Andrology and Flow Cytometry to join us on a full‑time, permanent basis.
Our small team operates a weekday core hours service, with onsite discipline‑specific support available from the Team Manager. The site is the Hub laboratory, which uses a leading technological approach with state‑of‑the‑art equipment and workflow based on Lean principles. SPS supports testing for the local NHS Trust and primary care providers.
We hold ISO 15189 UKAS accreditation and are an HCPC‑approved training laboratory for both IBMS registration and specialist portfolios.

Main duties of the job As a Biomedical Scientist within the Diagnostic Cytology team, you will perform and interpret routine and specialist testing, provide patient‑centred scientific excellence while maintaining high quality standards in accordance with ISO 15189.
You will supervise, mentor and support other Biomedical Scientists and Trainee Biomedical Scientists, sharing your knowledge, experience and passion.
As a registered Biomedical Scientist you will maintain fitness to practice and participate actively in CPD. SPS will support your professional growth through a dedicated Training team and extensive resources.

Assist in clinical trials, development of new tests and research & validation of equipment ensuring compliance with regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management policies.
Provide technical advice to clinical staff and perform routine and specialist biomedical investigations, participating in daily scientific and technical activities under senior supervision.
Help ensure compliance with all policies, including:
Southwest Pathology Service policies and SOPs
MHRA
NHSCSP
HTA
HFEA
Any other relevant body
Use the laboratory LIMS, Q‑Pulse quality monitoring system and other application software according to authorised protocols, assisting in computer data entry and quality assurance processes.
Communicate efficiently, courteously and with clarity at all times, reporting incidents and adverse events to senior staff and assisting in investigations.
Plan and prioritise work allocations, training plans and audits, responding appropriately to routine and urgent activities.
Encourage active participation in continuous professional development and support the introduction of new technologies and systems as a change advocate.
Act as an ambassador for Diversity & Inclusion and model SYNLAB values and behaviours.
Complete all statutory, mandatory and essential training within specified timeframes.
Qualifications
HCPC registration, with post‑registration experience in Diagnostic Cytology, Andrology and/or Flow Cytometry
Ability to prioritise and manage own workload
Good understanding of the clinical significance of results and ability to interpret and act upon them
Confident decision‑making in line with guidelines and written procedures to support patient care
Band 6 requirement: Specialist Portfolio or equivalent qualifications and experience
Band 5 applicants: SPS offers support for progression to Band 6 with automatic progression upon successful completion of the Specialist Portfolio and a retention bonus
