Post Doctoral Research Scholar
Position Title: Post‑Doctoral Research Position (License 8150758) – Full‑time, exempt – Maywood‑Health Sciences Campus, PHYSIOLOGY Department.
Location: Loyola University Chicago, Maywood (PHYSIOLOGY (06240A)).
Role Overview Dr. David Barefield, Assistant Professor, seeks a postdoctoral fellow to assist on several recently funded projects focusing on atrial myopathies, contractile regulation of striated muscle, genetic cardiomyopathies, and atrial fibrillation pathophysiology. The fellow will work with mouse models and human induced pluripotent stem cell–derived cardiomyocyte models to study contractile biophysics, cellular and whole‑heart electrophysiology, in vivo physiology, and molecular/biochemical mechanisms.
This position offers the opportunity to develop and pursue independent research projects during training.
Responsibilities
Conduct research using mouse and stem cell cardiomyocyte models.
Perform contractile biophysics, electrophysiology, and biochemical assays.
Develop independent projects and publish findings.
Collaborate with team members and attend scientific meetings.
Assist in mentoring and training of lab members.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
PhD in a biomedical research field (obtained or to be obtained before start).
Experience in molecular cardiology, microscopy, tissue culture, biochemistry, mouse physiology, or biophysics.
Strong independent thinking and initiative.
Enthusiastic about novel research and developing new techniques.
Team player with interest in mentoring.
Motivation for career development (fellowships, networking, etc.).
Excellent verbal and written communication.
Training and Mentoring
Access to super‑resolution quantitative microscopy, image analysis, mass spectrometry, and electrophysiology techniques.
Use of mouse models and induced pluripotent stem cell disease models.
PI commitment to mentoring and career development tailored to desired career path.
Flexible start date; regular interactions with Chicago research universities and attendance at local and national scientific societies.
Minimum Education and Experience
MD or PhD required.
Additional Skills
General office suite proficiency; willingness to learn lab specific programs.
Compensation
Minimum salary: $61,008 per annum.
Maximum salary: $74,088 per annum.
