Division Description Power Enterprise Division – provides clean, renewable electricity through Hetch Hetchy Power and CleanPowerSF, and manages street/ pedestrian lighting.

Job Description Under general direction, the 5241 Electrical Engineer works in the Distribution Engineering group handling electric service interconnections. Responsibilities include customer service, technical issue resolution, and grid planning.

Essential Functions

Create and maintain SFPUC electric system models.

Perform engineering analysis of requested interconnections to SFPUC infrastructure.

Provide good customer service and clearly communicate grid requirements to stakeholders.

Track interconnection agreements (solar, grid, etc.).

Investigate power quality, conduct site assessments, perform field inspections.

Prepare analysis, planning, and engineering design documents, cost estimates, and construction drawings for customer interconnections to the City‑owned distribution system.

Ensure compliance with utility practices, applicable codes, and standards.

Provide technical assistance and engineering support for the maintenance of existing transmission and distribution systems and facilities.

Other duties as assigned.

Working Relationships Initially no supervisory duties; may assist with supervising job classes 5207, 5203, 5201, and collaborate with other Power Enterprise divisions.

Nature of the Work The Grid Connections Engineer integrates new interconnection projects to SFPUC’s owned electrical system. Key tasks include:

Grid Feasibility Studies – analyze grid capacity, voltage, fault currents.

Interconnection Design – design interface between customer installation and grid, specify equipment and ensure compliance with technical standards.

Regulatory Compliance – ensure connection proposals meet national grid codes, utility requirements, safety regulations.

System Planning – review aggregate load, plan system improvements.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements:

Five (5) years verifiable professional electrical engineering experience, including at least two (2) years equivalent to the 5207 Associate Engineer level; possession of a California Professional Engineer registration in Electrical Engineering.

Desirable Qualifications

Power system analysis (load flow, fault level, stability).

Grid codes and interconnection standards (IEC, IEEE, PG&E).

Protection systems, SCADA, automation.

Power system simulation tools (SKM PowerTools, ETAP, etc.).

Experience in renewable interconnections.
