About the Company The Human Resource Specialist is responsible for aiding and facilitating the human resource processes within the organization. The primary responsibilities attached to this position include a general understanding of Human Resource components such as but not limited to talent acquisition, compensation, onboarding, benefits, COBRA, short-term and long-term disability, DCFMLA, paid medical leave, and employee relations. In addition, this role is to administer employee’s health and welfare plans and act as a liaison between employees and insurance providers. This position resolves benefits-related problems and ensures effective use of plans and positive employee relations. The Human Resource Specialist ensures that certain plans are administered in accordance with federal and state regulations and that plan provisions are followed. This role provides administrative support to the human resource function as needed, including record-keeping, file maintenance, and HRIS entry. Responsibilities Administers health and welfare plans, including enrollments, changes, and terminations. Processes required documents through payroll and insurance providers to ensure accurate record-keeping and proper deductions. Performs customer service functions by answering employee requests and questions. Completes Forms I-9, verifies I-9 documentation, maintains I-9 files and 403B while maintaining confidentiality. Collaborate with managers to understand the goals and retention plans for the organization. Submits online investigation requests and assists with new-employee background checks. Conducts benefits audits, or other HR-related programs and recommends corrective action. Assists with processing of terminations. Assists with the preparation of the performance review process. Assists with recruitment and interview process. Tracks the status of candidates in HRIS and responds with follow-up letters at the end of the recruiting process. Schedule meetings and interviews as requested by leadership. Makes photocopies; mails, scans, and emails documents; and performs other administrative functions. Files documents into appropriate employee files and in the HRIS system. Assists or prepares correspondence as requested. Prepares new-employee files. Processes mail. Responsible for extending contingent job offers, sending offer letters, and managing the onboarding process. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in human resources, management, or related fields. Five to seven (5-7) years of experience as an HR Specialist in a nonprofit environment. Current SHRM-SCP/ CP or related certification. Demonstrates understanding of HR's full employee lifecycle including talent acquisition, culture, compensation, benefits, COBRA, onboarding, tuition reimbursement, STD/LTD, DCFMLA, PML, performance management, employee development, and employee relations. Proficient with Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), OnePoint preferred, and Microsoft Office. General knowledge of the District of Columbia and Maryland federal, state, and local employment laws. Effective verbal, oral, and written communication skills. Experience working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Successfully pass a background investigation. Seniority level
