JOB SUMMARY:
The Weld Supervisor is responsible for leading and coordinating welding operations to meet production schedules while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, and efficiency. The role oversees a team of welders and fabricators, ensures adherence to weld specifications and drawings, and supports continuous improvement throughout the weld department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Production & Workflow
Supervise daily welding activities including MIG, TIG, and fabrication of mild and stainless steel components.
Assign job duties and allocate manpower according to production schedules.
Monitor progress to ensure timely completion of jobs while minimizing downtime.
Coordinate with Planning, Engineering, Quality, and Material Handling to ensure parts flow smoothly through the shop.
Team Leadership
Lead, coach, and support a team of welders across multiple shifts if required.
Conduct shift meetings to communicate goals, safety topics, and production updates.
Provide training for new employees and ongoing development for existing team members.
Participate in performance evaluations and corrective action processes as needed.
Quality & Safety
Enforce all safety protocols and ensure proper use of PPE and welding equipment.
Ensure all welds meet company and customer specifications by reviewing drawings and performing visual inspections.
Work with Quality and Engineering teams to address weld defects and rework issues.
Promote a clean, organized, and hazard‑free work environment through regular audits and 5S practices.
Equipment & Maintenance
Ensure welding tools, machines, jigs, and fixtures are properly maintained and calibrated.
Report equipment issues and coordinate with Maintenance to minimize downtime.
Monitor consumables usage and assist with inventory tracking and replenishment.
Continuous Improvement
Identify and implement improvements in welding techniques, fixture design, or workflow to reduce cycle time and increase throughput.
Support Lean initiatives such as visual controls, standard work, and waste reduction.
Assist in fixture design feedback and input to Engineering for process improvements.
Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises hourly production staff in weld.
Responsible for staffing, coaching, performance management, and scheduling within the assigned areas.
Creates a positive, disciplined work environment focused on results and continuous improvement.
Provides regular updates to the Area Manager and collaborates on staffing and production planning.
Travel Demands
May require occasional travel locally, to customer sites, or for training purposes.
Qualifications & Requirements
Proficient in MIG welding (TIG a plus), with strong knowledge of welding symbols, blueprints, and GD&T.
Familiarity with welding various materials and thicknesses (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel).
Strong understanding of weld quality standards and defect identification.
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word); ERP system experience is a plus.
Effective communicator with strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
Ability to work in a dynamic, fast‑paced manufacturing environment.
Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement methodologies.
Strong communication, coaching, and team‑building skills.
Strong decision‑making abilities in a high‑paced environment.
Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, hands‑on environment with daily production demands.
Strong basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
Basic reading and writing proficiency.
Successful completion of 90‑day probationary period.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED required.
Technical certification in welding or fabrication preferred.
AWS (American Welding Society) certification is a plus.
Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma training a plus.
3–5+ years of welding experience, including 1–2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
Physical Demands
Regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting (up to 50 lbs).
Exposure to welding fumes, heat, sparks, and loud noise.
Manual dexterity to operate welders, grinders, and hand tools.
Must be able to wear all required PPE.
Work Environment
Manufacturing floor with exposure to hot work, fabrication equipment, and moderate‑to‑high noise.
Fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment with emphasis on safety and quality.
Hands‑on leadership presence expected on the shop floor.
