Senior Mechanical Engineer for Parkinson’s Exoskeleton
ABOUT US Skip is on a mission to make life joyful through powered movement. Movement is a powerful way to build physical, mental and social health. Yet it is elusive for the 2 billion people due to age, injury, or disability. We are building products that will restore mobility for millions and enable a new frontier of joyful movement experiences. We want to build a future where a grandparent can easily outrun their grandkids and no one is left behind at the trailhead.
Skip is a 20‑person early‑stage start‑up that spun out of Google X in 2023. With deep cross‑disciplinary expertise and key partnerships (e.g. with Arc’teryx, UCSF and Georgia Tech) we are uniquely positioned to launch the first commercially successful wearable robotic device, the MO/GO, and are developing a platform to rapidly support Parkinson’s disease and other movement challenges to transform millions of lives in the coming years.
THE ROLE We are assembling a new team of highly motivated and adaptable individuals to design, validate and build a new generation of wearable robots to bring joy to people living with movement disorders.
We are looking for a mechanical engineer or similar who will
lead the hardware prototyping, design and development
of our next‑gen product for
fall prevention
and people living with
Parkinson’s disease .
Team collaborators include:
Our clinical partners (a world‑class movement disorder clinic located nearby) – to make sure our development is always patient‑centered.
Our Parkinson’s controls engineer and research lead – to ensure that the hardware iterations are aligned with what is necessary for controls experiments and feel best holistically on the device.
Our product designer with soft‑goods and wearables experience.
Our mechanical engineers for the consumer product – to take advantage of the synergies and learnings at the platform level, for example the actuators and PBC.
We are a flat team of 20 senior engineers, where everyone contributes directly to product development. This will start as an IC role, but you will be responsible for scoping, planning and shaping not just your own work but Skip’s roadmap for clinical applications.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Own the hardware vision for our Parkinson’s product . Have a strong intuition for what is needed and the drive to make it a reality. Identify, scope and workplan our hardware
roadmap .
Rapidly prototype
different versions and configurations of the product. Prioritize comfort, weight and functionality.
Design components and own the master
CAD
for our new product – from architecture, design, mass optimisation, design‑for‑manufacturing, tolerance analysis, implementation, testing, through commercialization.
Design experiments and protocols to test, improve and validate prototypes with users.
Test prototypes and
iterate with patients , collate and integrate feedback from patient sessions into hardware design.
Drive engineering specifications from product requirements and work cross‑functionally.
Select materials and manufacturing processes
that meet product performance and durability requirements.
Assemble and maintain a small fleet of prototypes.
Develop specifications, requirements, test methods and protocols through formal verification to ensure functionality, safety and efficacy of design.
Bring joy to the team, participate in embarrassing team events, tolerate KZ’s terrible music choices.
Qualifications
5+ years’ experience in mechanical engineering in a professional setting.
Excellence in
CAD , ideally SolidWorks.
Expertise designing parts for a broad range of
prototyping and manufacturing processes , such as additive manufacturing, 3D printing, plastic injection moulding, carbon fibre composites, machining, casting, etc.
Experience in
mechanical analysis
including geometric, dimensioning and tolerancing, static and dynamic analysis, FEA and thermal analysis.
A passion for making complex designs more practical and scalable. Ideally experience with a scaled
consumer or medical product .
Experience with
wearables .
Experience with robotics, mechatronics, or powered
consumer electronics
(e.g. drones, robot vacuums).
Able to deliver quality work in a fast‑paced startup environment.
Ability to relocate to work at the Skip Bay Area office.
Sense of humour, tolerant of Aussie & Canadian spelling.
Personal motivation to improve human movement.
Taylor Swift fan. Good taste in background music :)
This is a full time position working at the Skip office in the San Francisco Bay Area, starting Jan 2026.
