Founding Mechanical Engineer
role at
AXION
AXION is a deep‑tech startup building non‑invasive brain‑computer interfaces. For millions with motor impairments, simple digital interactions like clicking a button or sending a message can take painfully long minutes. Our first product, AXION Click, lets people control an iPad using nothing but their eyes and brainwaves. We discovered and patented Stimulus Preceding Negativity (SPN) – a neural signal that detects the intent to click non‑invasively. Combined with eye‑tracking, SPN enables effortless and seamless interactions with computers.
This isn’t just assistive tech; it’s superhuman. We are creating the foundation for the next era of human‑computer interaction. We are a team of passionate researchers and engineers developing technology that doesn’t just solve today’s accessibility challenges but transforms how everyone interacts with digital devices.
About the Role As AXION’s Founding Mechanical Engineer, you will own the complete mechanical design of our neural headband. You’ll be responsible for creating a wearable device that is comfortable and reliable enough for all‑day use and manufacturable at scale. This role requires both deep technical expertise in wearable design and the ability to move quickly from CAD to prototype to production in a resource‑constrained startup environment.
What You’ll Do
Design and iterate on the complete mechanical system for AXION Click, balancing comfort, functionality, and manufacturability
Optimize sensor placement and mechanical interfaces to ensure consistent signal acquisition across diverse head geometries
Own the integration of electronic components (PCBs, cameras, batteries) into a compact, wearable form factor with proper thermal management
Design for manufacturing: select materials, define assembly processes, and work with contract manufacturers to bring products to production
Conduct user testing with people with motor limitations, rapidly iterating based on feedback on comfort, fit, and durability
Collaborate closely with electrical and software teams to ensure seamless hardware‑software integration
Establish mechanical engineering processes, documentation, and design standards as we scale
What We’re Looking For Required:
5+ years of hands‑on mechanical engineering experience, ideally including shipping consumer or wearable neurotech products
Expert‑level CAD skills (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar) with a portfolio demonstrating wearable or product design work
Deep understanding of human factors and ergonomics, especially for head‑worn devices
Experience selecting materials for skin contact, durability, and manufacturing (plastics, elastomers, textiles)
Proven ability to take designs from concept through prototyping to manufacturing, including DFM principles
Experience working with contract manufacturers, managing tooling development, and production ramp
Ability to work independently and make sound design decisions with limited resources
Preferred:
Background in neurotech, EEG headsets, or other biosensing wearables
Knowledge of soft goods design and textile integration for adjustable, comfortable wearables
Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) for structural optimization
Understanding of electronics integration and thermal management in compact devices
Compensation Range: $150K – $200K
Equity 0.5% – 1.5%
Seniority level Mid‑Senior level
Employment type Full‑time
Job function Engineering and Information Technology
Industries Computers and Electronics Manufacturing
Location: San Francisco, CA
