SunVest’s Engineering team is responsible for all solar design and electrical, civil, and structural engineering support for the Development team and the Operations team. The Sr. Electrical Engineer will play a key role in the design and execution of SunVest’s renewable energy projects, including utility‑scale solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS). This individual will be responsible for creating and reviewing early‑stage and construction‑level plan sets, supporting both the Development and Operations teams, and coordinating with external Engineers of Record (EORs), utilities, and EPC partners to ensure timely, code‑compliant deliverables. Key Responsibilities:
Engineering Leadership & Design:
Lead the design and development of 30% and IFP engineering plan sets for solar and BESS projects, including detailed site plans, 1‑line diagrams, stringing plans, and equipment layouts. Review and approve designs to ensure technical accuracy, code compliance (NEC, IEEE, UL, and local AHJ requirements), and alignment with project and utility specifications. Develop and review PV system calculations, cable sizing, grounding, and overcurrent protection in accordance with NEC and best engineering practices. Provide engineering support to the Development and Operations teams, including conceptual layouts, technical feasibility reviews, and cost‑effective design solutions. IFP and IFC Design Coordination:
Coordinate directly with EORs and utilities to manage and deliver IFP (Issued for Permit) and IFC (Issued for Construction) plan sets within established project timelines. Oversee technical submittals and ensure that drawings and specifications meet AHJ, interconnection, and EPC requirements. Review electrical studies and reports (load flow, short‑circuit, coordination) and provide recommendations for design improvements or equipment selection. BESS & Equipment Selection:
Lead the engineering and integration of DC‑coupled and AC‑coupled BESS systems, including inverter and battery configurations, interconnection strategies, and protection coordination. Support major equipment selection, including switchgear, reclosers, transformers, GOAB, relays, and communication systems. Collaborate closely with BESS integrators, EPC partners, and equipment vendors to ensure optimal system performance and reliability. Process Improvement:
Contribute to developing internal engineering standards, templates, and quality control processes. Proactively identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, accuracy, and scalability across the engineering function. Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred). Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) required, with the ability to stamp drawings in Illinois. 4–7 years of experience in electrical engineering, preferably in renewable energy (solar + BESS experience highly desired). Demonstrated ability to independently lead electrical design for large‑scale solar or storage projects from concept through construction. Strong understanding of electrical codes and standards (NEC, IEEE, NFPA, IEC). Proficient with design tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP , PVsyst, or similar software. Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and project management skills. Strong sense of ownership, organization, and accountability with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
