The Tax Senior Manager, SALT - Credits & Incentives is responsible for advising clients on credit & incentive opportunities related to their business objectives, recommending alternative courses of action, and identifying methods of complying with credits & incentives statutes and regulations. The role includes marketing, networking, business development, and partnership with Core Tax Principals and Directors to provide expertise to clients. Job Duties
Research:
Identifies complex credits & incentives situations, outlines the issue(s), and identifies appropriate research sources Analyzes researched facts and sources prior to composing a detailed report or preparing a credits & incentives opportunities matrix Develops relationships with in-state and out-of-state Department of Tax/Revenue and Economic Development personnel
Tax Compliance:
Conducts detailed reviews of income tax returns to identify significant statutory credit opportunities Evaluates client’s current compliance processes and provides customized, automated solutions for annual credits & incentives reporting
Tax Consulting:
Drafts credits & incentives memorandums and other documentation on various issues Conducts review of client operations to determine jurisdictions with potential credits & incentives opportunities Applies all applicable state tax consulting sub‑specialties and confers with other STS professionals as appropriate Ensures engagement letters are adopted prior to engagement work and manages engagements Assists in developing consultative credits & incentives strategies Manages client expectations
Tax Controversy:
Drafts responses to notices from state taxing authorities Represents clients before tax authorities on credits & incentives issues Provides assistance with exam support
Tax Related Software:
Utilizes credits & incentives research databases and other related software in completing tasks
Tax Specialization:
Provides technical client service to multi‑state companies on credits & incentives matters Negotiates on credits & incentives matters Drafts technical memoranda regarding credits & incentives issues
Strategy Development:
Reviews studies of credits & incentives opportunities to identify alternative actions benefiting clients Develops new or improved ideas to advance client positions in maximizing awards Assists with researching credits & incentives strategies Suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisition
Other duties as required Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises the day‑to‑day workload of STS SALT Senior Associates and Associates on assigned engagements and reviews work product Ensures Senior Associates, Associates and Interns are trained on all relevant tax software Evaluates performance of Senior Associates and Associates and assists in developing goals to enhance professional development Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes performance evaluations for Managers, Senior Associates, Associates and Interns Acts as Career Advisor to Senior Associates and Associates, as appropriate Education
Bachelors degree in Accounting or another relevant field, required Masters degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D., preferred Experience
Eight or more years of prior state and local/multistate experience in the credits & incentives area, required Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis, required Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, preferred License/Certifications
CPA certification or other relevant certification, required Software
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, required Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools, preferred Language
