Assistant Director, Youth and Young Adult Ministry

REPORTS TO: Director, Office of Hispanic Ministry
HOURS & FLSA STATUS: 45 hours per week, exempt, some evenings and weekends required, occasional overnight trips

BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide leadership and support for pastors, parish personnel and volunteers, and other institutions to promote youth and young adult ministry within the Hispanic community (Residents and Migrants)

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Program

  • To promote the vision and collaborative ministry (pastoral de conjunto) proposed in the USCCBs documents related to Hispanic Ministry.
  • Implement the diocesan priority Youth Ministry & Vocations as detailed in the 2019 Diocesan Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry.
  • Provide direction for diocesan young adult ministry and offer support to parish young adult ministry leaders in collaboration with the English program of the office of youth and young adults.
  • Coordinate and support diocesan programs and initiatives for Hispanic youth including Pascua Juvenil and Quinceaera retreats and other youth gatherings that foster faith formation and community building (e.g. Confirmation catechetical programs which include Hispanic youth from public schools).
  • Coordinate programs and initiatives within the Hispanic community which promote and create spaces for vocational discernment especially discernment to the ordained priesthood and religious life.
  • Implement recommendations and strategies from the V Encuentro summary document focused on adolescents and young adult ministry.
  • Assist in the recruitment, training and support of volunteers for programs and activities related to Hispanic Ministry.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Practicing member of the Roman Catholic Church in good standing.
  • Support the mission of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Grand Rapids and the vision of Bishop Walkowiak.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Catholic Church including familiarity with structure, function, and institutions.
  • Degree or equivalent in areas related to Hispanic ministry, with emphasis on theological, religious, or pastoral studies.
  • Bilingual (Spanish-English) and have the ability to relate to and create bridges among Hispanics, mainstream and other ethnic communities.
  • Knowledgeable of the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development of youth and young adults.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in youth and young adult ministry.
  • Knowledgeable in a variety of youth and young adult ministry resources and approaches.
  • Must be willing to travel across all counties of the diocese and proactively reach out to parishes and young people. Michigan drivers license and reliable transportation required.
  • Ability to successfully balance daily tasks, project management, and conduct long range planning.
  • Ability to think creatively about emerging needs, demands and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated leadership and resourcefulness and a high degree of flexibility.
  • Excellent management, supervisory, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Marketing skills knowledge including desktop publishing and social media.
  • Energetic role model to inspire participation and enthusiasm.
