The Applied AI Data Science team at Walmart is seeking a talented and experienced

Staff Data Scientist specializing in Computer Vision

to join our Safety AI team. You will play a critical role in designing and deploying advanced computer vision solutions at scale, directly supporting Walmart’s commitment to safety for associates and customers. This position will focus on

Object detection, Vision‑Language Models (VLMs), and robust deduplication of large image datasets .

About Team: US Omni Tech Our team works closely with US stores and eCommerce to better serve customers by empowering team members, stores, and merchants with technological innovation. Focus areas include customers, stores and employees, in‑store service, merchant tools, merchant data science, search and personalization.

What you’ll do

Develop, implement, and optimize large‑scale computer vision models with a primary focus on object detection and scene understanding for safety‑critical applications.

Apply and fine‑tune Vision‑Language Models such as CLIP, BLIP, or similar to enhance multi‑modal reasoning and extraction of insights from image‑text pairs.

Design and implement deduplication algorithms to efficiently identify and remove redundant or duplicate images, maintaining high‑quality datasets.

Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—engineering, product, and business stakeholders—to integrate computer vision solutions into production systems.

Analyze, interpret, and communicate findings from complex visual and multi‑modal data to improve Walmart’s safety initiatives.

Stay current with the latest trends and research in computer vision, deep learning, and AI safety, applying new techniques where appropriate.

Mentor and support junior data scientists, fostering a culture of technical excellence and knowledge sharing.

What you’ll bring Required

Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field, with a focus on computer vision or machine learning.

6+ years of hands‑on experience developing and deploying computer vision models at scale.

Advanced proficiency with object detection frameworks (e.g., YOLO, Faster R‑CNN, SSD).

Deep experience with Vision‑Language Models such as CLIP, BLIP, Flamingo, including model fine‑tuning and evaluation.

Strong background in deduplication techniques for image datasets (e.g., perceptual hashing, embedding similarity, feature‑based methods).

Proficiency in Python and deep learning libraries such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.

Experience working with large‑scale datasets and distributed/cloud computing environments.

Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 4 years’ experience in an analytics related field.

Option 2: Master’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 2 years’ experience in an analytics related field.

Option 3: 6 years’ experience in an analytics or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Data science, machine learning, optimization models, PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics.

Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.

Experience using open source frameworks (e.g., scikit‑learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).

Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Knowledge of accessibility best practices and willingness to support Walmart’s accessibility standards and guidelines for an inclusive culture.
