Job Purpose

The Director of Music and Liturgy is a vital role responsible for overseeing and enhancing the music and liturgical practices at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and School. Aligning with the pastor's vision, this position involves selecting and leading traditional and contemporary music to enrich the parish's worship experience, fostering a community of active discipleship through liturgical celebrations.

The parish utilizes the Source and Summit Missals and a custom parish music book with eclectic selections, aiming to incorporate both Catholic tradition and current liturgical music. The music program includes a SATB choir, a Women's Schola focusing on chant, a praise and worship ensemble for Eucharistic Adoration, and a children's choir during Christmas and Easter. The director will work to further develop this program in collaboration with the pastor.

Responsibilities

Select music that complements weekly Scriptures and Propers in consultation with the pastor.

Direct all choirs and music ensembles; accompany Masses and special liturgical celebrations.

Create schedules for rehearsals and liturgies for accompanists, choirs, musicians, and cantors.

Lead rehearsals for all musical groups.

Provide accompaniment at school liturgies and funerals.

Coordinate music for weddings with engaged couples and the wedding coordinator.

Oversee training, scheduling, and leadership of music ministers.

Maintain music resources, including library, copyright permissions, and reporting (e.g., OneLicense, CCLI).

Manage church and school sound systems and maintain instruments like piano and organ.

Collaborate with staff to plan and execute liturgies.

Design and publish liturgy guides with proper copyright citations.

Prepare cantor scripts for liturgies.

Direct liturgical ministries such as lectors, sacristans, extraordinary ministers, ushers, and servers, including training and communication.

Ensure scriptural and intercessory selections are prepared for all liturgies using resources like ORDO.

Manage sacristy supplies and supervise volunteers for linens, vestments, and other liturgical items.

Participate in staff meetings and retreats.

Engage in professional development through workshops and diocesan events.

Manage the liturgy budget effectively.

Perform other duties as assigned.
