Director of Finance
Bluefield University seeks a detail‑oriented and mission‑driven Director of Finance to oversee the university’s financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and proper management of institutional resources. The Director of Finance will play a key role in budget preparation, financial reporting, internal controls, and supporting strategic decision‑making.
Essential Duties, Responsibilities, And Functions
Financial Management & Reporting
Prepare, analyze, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Prepare short‑term and long‑term cash flow projections.
Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal/state regulations, and institutional policies.
Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, gift accounting, and financial aid functions.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Collaborate with VP for Finance and Administration to prepare the annual institutional budget.
Work with Controller to ensure university spending is within budget constraints and provide related variance analysis and recommendations.
Develop financial models to support long‑term planning and strategic initiatives.
Compliance & Audit
Coordinate external audits, ensuring timely completion and clean audit outcomes.
Maintain compliance with federal, state, and accreditation financial reporting requirements.
Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard institutional assets.
Treasury & Cash Management
Oversee cash flow, banking relationships, and investment of institutional funds.
Manage debt service and financing strategies in collaboration with leadership.
Leadership & Collaboration
Supervise finance staff, fostering professional growth and accountability.
Partner with academic and administrative units to provide financial insights.
Support grant reporting and restricted fund management.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field.
Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in financial management.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in a supervisory role.
Strong knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, and financial analysis.
Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
Excellent organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred Credentials
CPA, CMA, MBA, or related advanced credential.
Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., Ellucian Colleague, Banner, Jenzabar, or similar higher‑ed systems). Familiarity with higher education accounting standards and reporting (FASB, GASB).
Prior experience in higher education, nonprofit, or grant‑funded environments.
Familiarity with fund accounting and financial aid regulations.
Demonstrated experience with fund accounting and nonprofit financial management.
Knowledge of endowment or investment management, and donor‑restricted funds.
