Summary HII Mission Technologies is seeking a Naval Combat Systems Engineer to support advanced training and engineering initiatives for the U.S. Navy and joint warfighting communities specializing in Aegis Ballistics Missile Defense Systems on the contract. This role leverages deep expertise in Aegis Combat Systems, Aegis Weapon Systems, and Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) missions to ensure mission readiness, system reliability, and effective training solutions.
Why This Role Is Important This position directly impacts the Navy’s ability to train, certify, and sustain combat readiness in the face of evolving ballistic missile threats. By combining hands‑on Aegis/BMD operational knowledge with systems engineering expertise, the SME ensures that integrated training environments and mission systems are accurate, reliable, and aligned with real‑world operational demands.
What You Will Do
Perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, supportability, and effectiveness analyses for total training systems, with a focus on ballistic missile defense scenarios.
Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements (including MDA requirements for threat models and operational protocols) into total training systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
Perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detailed trade studies, requirement gathering, requirements allocation, and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into software specifications.
Apply extensive technical expertise and have full knowledge of other related disciplines.
Able to communicate effectively and clearly present technical approaches and findings, including presenting SYSML models and simulation results to stakeholders.
Develop technical solutions to complex problems that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. This includes developing innovative approaches to simulate ballistic missile threats and countermeasures.
Activities include Interface Working Groups, Interface Control Working Groups.
Describe the system in terms of the user needs it will fulfill, its relationship to existing systems or procedures, and the ways it will be used. This includes documenting the system architecture using SYSML and ensuring it meets the needs of ballistic missile defense training.
Must possess an active or be able to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
All candidates will be subject to a pre‑employment background investigation and drug screening per Mission Technologies requirements.
The selected applicants will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
This position is onsite at HII in Virginia Beach, VA.
What You Must Have Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2+ years relevant experience; OR
Masters degree in a related field (0 years experience required); OR
High School Diploma/equivalent and 6+ years relevant experience
Technical Skills
Demonstrated experience with Shipboard Combat Systems, Aegis Weapon Systems, or BMD mission operations
Strong background in system testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of complex electronic/network systems
Credentials
U.S Citizen
Current or Active DoD Secret Clearance
Preferred Requirements
Experience working with DoD customers, projects, and processes, particularly related to ballistic missile defense.
Demonstrated Experience in one or more of the following Naval System areas.
AEGIS
Strong understanding of ballistic missile defense concepts and technologies.
Proven experience with requirement gathering and analysis, particularly in the context of training systems.
DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+, GSEC, SSCP, or higher)
Physical Requirements Office, industrial, or shipboard environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances. Lifting and moving materials may be required.
