Position Summary As a Line Design Engineer at Oncor, you’ll design, lead, and oversee engineering responsibilities related to transmission line design projects at 69, 138, and 345 kV voltages. Includes engineering, cost estimate creation, project execution, and material procurement. We are considering applicants with multiple experience levels and skills.
Key Responsibilities
Produce engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and bills of material for transmission line construction projects (69 kV–345 kV) in accordance with company practices while meeting performance standards.
Perform Power Line Systems – Computer Aided Design and Drafting (PLS-CADD) modeling, structure analysis and loading tree calculations, design criteria development, sag‑tension calculations, wire blowout, swing angle, damper recommendations, structure spotting, clearance reports, wire selection, etc.
Design steel, concrete, or lattice towers; foundation designs using drilled pier, stub angle, or direct embed; determine proper sag, tension, swing calculations, and thermal characteristics of conductors. Projects average 1 to 50 miles of line with costs ranging from $550 k to $150 M.
Prepare budgetary cost estimates and Work Authorizations to obtain financial approval for assigned projects.
Communicate, coordinate, and interface with internal groups and external stakeholders to ensure designs and construction practices are appropriate.
Provide design solutions and engineering designs when required to resolve line performance problems.
Provide technical assistance to transmission operations and maintenance organizations.
Develop expertise in electrical subject matter associated with designing transmission lines.
Perform other duties as assigned, including customer engagement and related projects.

Apply analysis to identify best solutions for technical problems and communicate and commit to actions consistent with legal, regulatory, code, and corporate requirements.
Understand processes and clearance requirements associated with transmission line design.
Demonstrate organizational and multitasking skills to handle diverse work.

Education & Experience
Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering required.
Professional Engineer license in any state is encouraged.
Engineer
1 year of PLS-CADD modeling experience required.
Basic knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Staff Engineer
3 years of PLS-CADD modeling experience required.
1 year of PLS-Pole and/or PLS‑Tower modeling experience required.
Competence to manage and design transmission line projects independently.
Effectively communicate complex subject matter and company issues to vendors and employees.
High level of knowledge in at least one specific area related to transmission line subject matter.
Advanced knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Senior Engineer
5 years of PLS-CADD modeling experience required.
3 years of PLS-Pole and/or PLS‑Tower modeling experience required.
2 years of project management experience managing large scale projects or initiatives required.
Competence to manage and design transmission line projects independently.
Effectively communicate and resolve minor issues with other work groups while presenting detailed documentation and plans.
Manage a moderate number of projects while maintaining work product quality, reliability, and volume.
Advanced knowledge in at least one specific area related to transmission line subject matter.
Expert knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Measure Of Success
Participate in training of other engineers.
Demonstrate technical aptitude and willingness to learn.
Consistently deliver high quality, on-time work product.
Proactively identify issues and potential solutions associated with assigned projects and initiatives.
Demonstrate ability to interface with external and internal business partners professionally.
Show skills in prioritization, multitasking and adaptability to change.
